Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of others. This type of intelligence is important in our daily lives as we face challenging situations. These skills help us to respond to situations successfully and maintain positive relationships. While talking with parents, one of the most common questions families ask is "How can I help at home". Knox County Schools (KCS) has put together free resources and suggestions on how families can support literacy skills at home. This question has become more urgent as families hear about the recent legislation known as the "3rd Grade Retention Law". Click on the link below to find out what "Parents Need to Know" as well as family friendly Literacy Resources that you can do with your child to help support these skills.

Click on the link below for a short video designed to help youth identify "What Job Skills Employers are Looking For" and tips on how to get a keep a job. In about two minutes, skills such as Self Management and Transferable skills are discussed. (Video is presented by Exceptional Lives - a Non Profit working with individuals with special needs.)

Talking to kids about consent can be difficult for parents. Children need to know that they can set boundaries on when and how their bodies are touched by others. Having regular conversations can help teach them to respect boundaries. Some examples of ways to teach content include:

• “Do you want a hug goodbye today? We could also wave or high five.”
• “Can I help you put your jacket on?”
• “Can I sit next to you on the bus?”

This fair’s program focuses on opportunities for students with a history of IEPs, 504 plans, or therapeutic supports and accommodations. Each year, about 20 percent of graduating high school students fall into this category. It will also aid students who do not have formal accommodations because learning differences can come in many forms.

The fair will provide attendees with information that can assist them in postsecondary transition planning. We will host a safe and engaging forum for students with learning differences (and their families) so they can explore the many available college options and learn from experts on how to make the most of the college experience. The virtual college fair format allows students time to process information at their own pace.
