Shark Tales Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: September 8, 2023
Principal Update
Dear Sheiko Shark Families,
We had another amazing week here at Sheiko Elementary! We hosted a "One School - One Book" initiative where every teacher read, "Each Kindness" to their class. Be sure to check out the cute pictures in this newsletter! Our art teacher, Mrs. Tucker, will be doing a special art project with river rocks to emphasize the "ripple effect" that kindness can have in our homes, in our school, and in our community. We are still in need of more river rocks. Please see the Amazon link below if you are able to donate. I also read, "The Recess Queen" to every class in order to review school-wide expectations of respect, responsibility, and safety. Be sure to ask your child about it!
This week's big announcement is about Open House. This event will be on Thursday, September 14th. Third grade families will attend from 6-6:30, fourth grade families will be from 6:45 to 7:15, and fifth grade families will be from 7:30-8:00. Ms. Glaser, Ms. Quinlan, and Ms. Chase will be presenting in their classrooms from 6-6:30. Please stop by to see the music room (Mrs.Virta), the icenter (Mrs. VanNostrand), and the art room (Mrs.Tucker) from 6:30-7. THIS IS A PARENT'S ONLY EVENT. Please give yourself enough time to be in your child's classroom by the starting time. Teachers will be presenting the information about their classroom.
We are excited to offer many more events at Sheiko this year! Based on our data from our Panorama survey that you took in the spring, this is very important to our entire school community. Your voice was heard! Ouur school-wide goal is to have every family volunteer or attend at least one event this school-year. We are well on our way!
Have a fantastic weekend! Thank you for all you do!

FRIENDLY REMINDERS
We know the fall days are upon us, but please remember that there are no spaghetti straps, stomachs showing, or super short shorts when the weather is warm.
We are asking that students leave their smart watches at home. They have proven to be a huge distraction to teaching and learning. Students may have phones (but totally not necessary!) as long as they are powered down and in their backpacks. Students will have one reminder to put them away. Otherwise, these items will be turned into the office for parent pick up if they are out.Thank you for your support in this matter!
AMAZON WISH LIST
We are doing a special project in art class to go along with our "Choose Kindness" theme. First, teachers are kicking off the theme by reading, "Each Kindness". There is a part in the story where a rock is dropped in the water and the reader learns about the "ripple effect" that kindness can have in the world. In art class, students will be painting rocks, but we still need more rocks. Please consider donating rocks by using the link below and having the rocks shipped right to Sheiko Elementary! We thank you for your support!

PTO INFORMATION
Dear Sheiko Elementary Families,
The PTO Board welcomes you to a great year at Sheiko! We have many exciting things planned
for our students, families and staff. As we continue to help build a strong community of leaders
and learners, we will have several events and fundraisers on our calendar and encourage you to
participate. Due to the outstanding support and dedication of Sheiko Families like you, the PTO
can assist the students with success in and out of the classroom. With your help, we can provide
Sheiko with reading and vocabulary resources, host family events, administrative and teacher
support, classroom supplies, and more.
Investments like these in our children’s school and education are possible because of the
financial support our families provide through our fundraisers.
Please join us at the school for our PTO Meetings on Tuesdays, at 7:00pm. These meetings will
be in person and a Zoom link will be provided below. All meetings will be in the iCenter. Come
introduce yourself, reconnect with old friends and meet new ones, and learn more about
opportunities to collaborate with the PTO during all of the fantastic events taking place this
year.
We are looking forward to our new year together! If you have any questions or need assistance,
please feel free to contact any of us.
Kind Regards,
Sheiko PTO Board

FOOD ALERGY INFORMATION
Dear Parents/Guardians:
There are students in our school that have severe allergies. It is important that any snack or treats brought in are sesame and peanut/tree nut free. This includes products that are made in a facility that processes nuts. Snack/treats CANNOT be homemade, either. Please help by reading the labels before you buy the snack/treat.
Here is a website that you can use when purchasing snacks/treats for your child: https://snacksafely.com. This guide lists many foods that are safe to bring into the classroom (many of them are snacks you might eat within your own home).
Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Blaine McDowell
Principal
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Sheiko Elementary receives Federal Title 1 funds to assist students in meeting state achievement standards. This letter lets you know about your right to request information about the qualifications of classroom staff working with your child and about student assessments given during the school year.
Title 1 schools must meet federal regulations related to teacher qualifications as defined in the ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act). These regulations allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials. At any time, you may ask:
If the teacher meets state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching.
If the teacher has received an emergency or conditional certification through which state qualifications were waived.
What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.
Whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional, and if so his/her qualifications.
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) which was signed into law in December 2015 and reauthorizes the ESEA contains additional parent right to know request options, such as:
Information on policies regarding student participation in assessments and procedures for opting out.
Information on required assessments including:
Subject matter tested
Purpose of the test
Source of the required (if applicable)
Amount of time it take students to complete the test
Time and format of distributing results
At any time, you may request any or all of the information above from me.
Sheiko staff are fully committed to helping your child develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. We appreciate your support and partnership as work to provide the best education for your child.
Sincerely,
Blaine McDowell
Principal
Dear Parents of West Bloomfield School District Students,
If your child is a student (3 to 26 years of age) in the West Bloomfield Schools, s/he can also participate in the 2023-24 Blessings in a Backpack program. This program sends six non-perishable meals home each Friday of the school year. Its goal is to make sure that no child goes hungry on the weekend. Run by volunteers, there is NO cost to you.
To enroll in this program, please fill out the form below and return it to your school office or email it to katherinesheiko@hotmail.com. This registers your child/ren in the Blessings program and alerts us to any allergies they might have. The first backpack of food will be distributed to your child at his/her local school the first week of October.
Please use this link to enroll today.
