GLOW GAZETTE
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 6, 2023
Message from the Principal
Students & Parents,
The semester, and school year, are moving along at a rapid pace, and in just another week we will be at the midway point of Quarter 2, and nearing the end of our 1st Semester. Our school days are full and each day of instruction is vitally important to your child's academic success and to our high school students' successful completion of their 1st Semester courses. While attendance is important everyday, it is critically important now, as we will be talking about and preparing for high school 1st semester exams very soon! Please ensure that your child is present at school each day, and when absences are necessary, please ensure that they are for reasons that will be "excused" when accompanied with a documented note/email for the absence upon their return.
Also, we welcome November and this season of Thanksgiving, we want to remind all members of our school community of just how grateful we are that you CHOOSE to be a part of the great things that are happening at GLOW Academy. We recognize that our students, parents, and teachers make a a daily decision to choose GLOW, and our school is better because you make the choice to be a part of our school community.
Throughout this month, I encourage students and parents to drop a quick email to the teachers and support staff who make a positive impact on your/your student's education and personal growth. Please thank them for the positive contribution they are making to your/your student's current and future success.
Finally, as we honor this month of gratitude, we also honor our Veterans of the US Armed Forces. As such, please note that Friday is a federal holiday in honor of Veterans Day. There is no school for students and staff on Friday, November 10.
Wishing you all a great week ahead!
Kate B. Tayloe
Principal

Pajama Drive
GLOW is partnering with Pajama Jams to collect NEW pajamas (size 5T - Adult XL) in November. Donations can be dropped at the front office, or a member of the High School National Honors Society or Middle School Student Government Association will come around to collect during Advisory. Once GLOW collects 100 pairs of PJ's we will have a PJ day on December 1st!
Pajama Jams is a local nonprofit that collects and distributes pajamas within the immediate area to those in need. To date, they've collected and distributed more than 20,000 pairs of jammies!
NC School of Science & Math Summer Programs Mtg
This event will describe various FREE summer NCSSM programs like Summer Ventures (a 4-week, no cost STEM/research camp for rising juniors/seniors), and Step-Up-to STEM @ECSU (a no cost summer STEM camp for current 8th graders).
You can find a Program Flyer w/QR Code HERE.
Student Attendance & HS Course Credit
We want to remind students and parents of the legislative guidelines and GLOW School Board Policy around student attendance. You can read GLOW's Attendance Policy HERE. The implications for chronic absences (more than 10) are especially important to note, as the policy states:
Grade Level Retention/High School Course Credit:
Middle school students who have UNEXCUSED absences for more than 10% (20 days) in a school year may be retained.
High school students who have UNEXCUSED absences for more than 10% (10 days in a semester course; 20 days in a year long course) shall not be awarded course credit regardless of class average.
For HIgh School students, this means that if a student accrues more than 10 unexcused absences in 1st period, for example, they will not receive course credit for their 1st period course. It is so important that students earn credit for all courses for which they are enrolled to ensure they stay on track to graduate with their cohort.
Please ensure that your child is at school unless an absences is absolutely necessary. Also, please ensure that documentation for excused absences are submitted to the student's Leadership Advisory teacher or the school's Data Manager upon the student's return to school.
