CogAT Testing 3rd, New to Ivy 4th graders, and 5th grade
The testing window for the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will run from October 25th-November 17th. The CogAT assessment is a tool that looks at a student's ability to problem solve using words, puzzles, and images, which is different than classroom tests that are related directly to the academic content taught by teachers. On the CogAT, students may encounter problem-solving activities that they have never seen before. While some of the tasks on the assessment come more easily to some students, this assessment is not used to suggest whether a student is at-risk academically. Our district only uses this data as one part of the advanced placement process and not for instructional planning.
During this testing window, ALL 3rd and 5th grade students at Ivy Hill will be participating in CogAT (Cognitive Abilities) testing. Students in 4th grade who are new to Ivy Hill or did not participate in this testing as a 3rd grader will also participate.
All 3rd-5th grade students taking the CogAT will participate in the Quantitative Battery. This data helps to inform our Advanced Math placement process. In addition, all 5th graders will participate in the Verbal Battery. This data helps to inform our Advanced Language Arts placement process for 6th grade.
Our testing schedule is as follows:
3rd Grade (Quantitative Battery): Thursday morning, 11/9
4th Grade (Quantitative Battery): Wednesday afternoon, 10/25
5th Grade (Quantitative & Verbal Battery): Wednesday, 11/8 & Thursday, 11/9 (mornings)
There is nothing special that you need to do at home with your child to prepare for this test. Just be sure they have a good breakfast, a good night’s sleep, and a willingness to do their very best! Thank you for your support with CogAT testing!
Ivy Gives Back Week - November 6-10
As we head into the season of "thanks" and "giving", we thought this would be the perfect time for Ivy Hill to show our Eagle Pride by supporting three great causes!
COAT, HAT AND MITTEN DRIVE
Did you know that nearly 38 million Americans are living in poverty and struggling to provide warm coats for themselves and their families? Our PTA along with our Ivy Hill students will be collecting new and gently used winter coats, hats and mittens the week of November 6-10. We will have collection boxes in the office.
OPERATION SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
For the past few years, Ivy Hill has been supporting a local charity called "Operation Support Our Troops". This organization collects toiletries, non perishable food items and letters of encouragement. Our donations will help them send holiday care packages out to Veterans and Active Military Personnel. Here is the link for the items needed.

Parent/Student Handbook Reminder
I also wanted to take a minute to remind everyone to read through the student handbook as it has a lot of important information. A couple of quick highlights I wanted to make you aware of are below:
The possession and use of cell phones and other electronic devices, including wearables, are subject to the following rules:
Elementary students are expected to leave electronics in the “off” position and in their backpacks throughout the school day.
Except as required in class or extracurricular programs, students cannot wear the following items in school:
Hats, hoods, helmets, or headgear (except as a religious observance or if medically necessary).
Sunglasses (unless medically necessitated)
I know this might be an adjustment for some students, so please remind your child that they will have to take off their “wearable” watch and hats off once they are at school. Our teachers will be reminding students of these expectations throughout the first weeks of school.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
