Tidal Shift Award
The Portland Museum of Art in Maine is promoting its third year of a young artist competition, offering $2,500 and $5,000 cash prizes. We are seeking art educators’ help across the East Coast to spread the word and encourage students (aged 14-22) to apply. The Tidal Shift Award is a juried competition that aims to showcase, amplify and elevate youth perspectives and art to highlight climate change solutions.
Why my state – isn’t this just for Maine? No. Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and all Native and Indigenous nations therein are all eligible. In fact, in its third year, the Portland Museum of Art is hopeful to receive many entries outside of Maine!
What kind of art? Very broadly speaking. Participants can submit any medium or combination of media (within official rule guidelines) including visual art, music, poetry and more.
Age/Details: Now open, the competition seeks artists ages 14 to 22 to submit artwork related to their perspective on climate change. The PMA values diversity and encourages young artists of any ethnic or racial identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ability to apply.
Computer Science Education Week
Computer Science Education Week is an annual call to action to inspire K - 12 students to learn computer science, advocate for equity in computer science education, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners in the field. The CSEdWeek theme this year focuses on Computer Science Heroes.
CS Heroes are individuals making a difference in computer science. We recognize those whose computer science work has contributed and harnessed the good in computer science. This year, we reflect on past successes while inspiring the next generation to leap into new possibilities.
Join this year’s celebration (12/9 - 12/15) by checking out the resources listed below, or visiting a coding club meeting to find out more about CS offerings at HHS! Code Club meets on Tuesdays after school in C207, and the Girls Who Code Club meets on Thursdays after school in C205. All are welcome.
Cool Science
Cool Science is a free and public art competition held each fall for all K-12 artists. Cool Science is a collaboration between the UMass Lowell, UMass Boston, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, University of Kansas, and Kansas City Art Institute. In 2019, Cool Science received a National Science Foundation grant that helped it expand the project beyond Massachusetts to Kansas, Missouri, and Southern New Hampshire. However, students from any location around the world are welcome to participate.
Challenge Questions
This year, we are asking young artists to answer one of the following challenge questions with a visual work of art:
1) What will your community look like when we are not using fossil fuels for energy in 20-30 years?
2) What jobs will be needed to adapt to more extreme weather?
3) How can plants and animals adapt to a warmer ocean?
Competition Winners
During this winter, we will select the best entries for display on public buses in Massachusetts and Kansas in 2024. The honorees will be recognized at our art exhibit celebrations next year.
