Pajama Family Math Night
We are so excited for our annual Pajama Family Math Night on Tuesday from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to wear their pajamas for the entire day and then at night to play some math games. We will have games set up in our gym, cafeteria, and STEM room.
When we incorporate play and learning, we provide our students with opportunities to develop proficiency in the Mathematical Practices that frame the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. For more information regarding our math curriculum, please visit Great Minds Eureka Math.
We really hope that you can join us!
Kindergarten Family Social
We had a super turnout for our Kindergarten Family Social on Saturday. It was a great opportunity for our students to show off their new climbing skills. It was also an opportunity for parents to connect with other familes and meet new friends.
Music Fun with Ms. Rao
The students are quite busy with keeping everything Happy and fun! Students have been getting familiar with musical terms and important words to know and use in music:
Andante, Concert Etiquette, Dance, Duration, Dynamic, Expression, Forte, Largo, Listening, Lyrics, Movement, Notes, Pattern, Percussion, Performance, Piano, Pitch, Presto, Rehearsals, Rhythm, Risers, Singing, Stance, Theatrical, Timing, and Voice Inflection.
We continue learning how to read music patterns with additional music notes that have brought out the best rhythm and movement in our HES musicians. The students have added percussion instruments while playing music patterns and will soon be singing pitches from Do Re Mi to sing and play simultaneously.
Students combine music terms largo, andante, and presto with their body movements and new dance skills. This combination of movement, singing pitches, rhythm pattern familiarity, and dynamics lays the foundation for large group settings for theatrical stage work.
Students have been extra engaged by meeting puppets Peggy and Simon, who have a theatrical, comedic relationship as they assist the students while learning more rhythm patterns that include challenging notes like eighth notes and sixteenth notes!
We have now entered our additional music enrichment time with first and second grade, adding in the listening and study of state songs. The students of HES are now “explorers,” while listening to the lyrics, they are connecting to the landmarks and special places for each state. Students are listening for commonality of lyrics, music patterns, voice inflection, and the timing in the music that is “piano or forte” (soft or loud). Also, the students are challenged with identifying the states' locations: North, South, East, or West, based on the lyrics and what the lyrics describe.
Finally, HES students are working on perfecting their concert performance etiquette and calm body stance on the risers to be ready for their concert rehearsals.
Hawthorne Holiday Food Drive Reminder
Our third annual HES Holiday Food Drive is in full swing. Our students will be designing cards and assembling snack bags for Feeding Westchester. This is a great opportunity for our students to practice being responsible community helpers and apply the communication skills they are learning in writing workshop. Please see the flyer below for more information. Please send in all donations by November 14th.
