Message from Superintendent Ana C. Riley
As we celebrate the joyous holiday season, I wanted to take a moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude and warmest wishes to our outstanding staff, enthusiastic students and supportive families.
During our gatherings with loved ones, let us cherish these festive moments and reflect on the spirit of this season and the many things we have learned from this past year that makes us who we are today. May this holiday season bring you joy, peace, and rejuvenation, allowing you to return in the new year refreshed and filled with renewed enthusiasm.
I am honored to be your superintendent and look forward to all that we will achieve together in the New Year. Wishing you and your families a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous new year filled with endless opportunities and achievements.
With our children in mind,
Ana C. Riley
Superintendent of Schools
Bond Referendum Passes
Voters in Bristol and Warren approved our school construction bond worth up to $200 million during the special election held on November 9, 2023. The bond includes plans to construct a new Mt. Hope High School building and make various infrastructural improvements to the other school buildings in the district. Voters in both Bristol and Warren approved of the measure by nearly a 2:1 margin in each town.
Thank you to all for your support over the past year regarding our Capital Projects! This project will allow us to create better, modernized facilities for all our students, and will lead to more opportunities and better outcomes for our students in the years to come.
Now that the voter approval has been secured, the district awaits the Rhode Island Department of Education’s (RIDE) approval of our Stage 2 application, which is planned for mid-December.
Once the Stage 2 application has been approved, we will begin working on a construction schedule. This next year will be focused on design and community engagement, with community focus groups being held over the next few months.
Assessment Scores Improve Across the District
Bristol Warren Regional School District accomplished a 2023 RICAS proficiency rate of 48% in ELA and 46.3% in mathematics. The rate exceeds the state by 14.9 % in ELA and 16.7% in math. As we diligently work to apply research-based practices within classrooms while leveraging our nationally approved high quality curriculum resources, a positive trend in student outcomes is emerging.
The 2023 RICAS data at the grade level reveals some highlights in achievement:
- Colt Andrews' Grade 3 proficiency rate rose by 11.7% in ELA and 8.5% in math from the previous year.
- Grade 3 students at Rockwell yielded a proficiency rate of 78.7% in ELA and 82.6% in mathematics.
- Hugh Cole saw an increase of 22.4% in grade 4 ELA proficiency.
- Hugh Cole’s grade 5 students also saw a 12% ELA increase with an 11.1% increase in mathematics.
- Colt Andrews' grade 5 ELA proficiency rate increased by 21.9% with math increasing by 8.5% from the previous year.
- Grades 6-8 students made a 3.9% increase in ELA and a 6.8% rise in mathematics proficiency across the middle school grade span.
- At KMS, every grade had an increase in ELA and mathematics. Grade 7 saw a 7.7% gain in math. Grade 8 also increased 7.1% in ELA and 8.2% in mathematics over the previous year. This growth in proficiency by KMS is remarkable considering that middle schools nationwide are still struggling to increase students' performance post pandemic.
SAT Scores Reach New Heights
For the second year in a row, MHHS students have set a new district record for proficiency on the ELA portion of the SAT, with 77% of all students meeting or exceeding state expectations and an average score of 551. This ranks as the highest average score on the ELA portion of the SAT in school history, Bristol history, and Warren history!
Also, for the second year in a row, MHHS led all schools in the state in overall growth on the ELA SAT, with an overall growth percentile of 67. Mt. Hope was one of only five schools in the state to achieve a 5-star achievement rating for ELA proficiency, meaning 75% or higher proficiency.
Congratulations to the class of 2024 on making Mt. Hope High School history!
RIDE Approves New CTE Programs
The high school will be adding Audio & Video Production and Graphic Communication Design programs to their current CTE offerings. Not only is this great for BWRSD students, but it also increases the school’s access to state and federal funding. In addition, these accredited programs will enable the school to collect tuition for students residing in other districts that lack these offerings so they can attend MHHS.
