FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT 2023
Leadership Message
Dear St. Luke Families,
Lent is a time of journey, reflection and penance to show respect and prepare our hearts and minds for the biggest miracle of our Catholic lives - that of the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The church asks us to do this in three main components of our lives with Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. There are many strategies to complete this journey either on your own or with your family - developing those practices helps to strengthen your family unit as well as, by using mindfulness, change your whole outlook. Taking just a moment to feel God’s presence by listening, singing or praying can help to remind you of how blessed you are and to pray for those around you or help those in need.
You can use other sources to ‘get more’ out of your Lenten journey such as checking out these websites:

If you need a place to start, here is one of my favourite Lenten prayers that I am blessed to share with you:
Dear Lord,
Show me your kindness and your gentleness, you who are meek and humble of heart.
So often I say to myself, ‘The Lord loves me,’ but very often this truth does not enter into the centre of my heart.
Let these weeks become an opportunity for me to let go of all my resistance to your love and instead be an occasion for you to call me closer to you.
Amen.
I wish you all blessings and love on your Lenten journey.

Feb ILS: Inclusive Learning Services: Monthly Home Connections
Inclusive Learning Teacher Consultant:
Build your child’s counting skills. Count out loud regularly and count items (ie. let’s put five blocks on the tower or counting the ducks floating in the bathtub). Start with 1-5 and slowly increase as your child gets more confident with numbers.
Use number word vocabulary, (a lot ,few, a little, more less, same). Do you want a lot of goldfish or just a few? Who has more goldfish?
One to one correspondence is important too. Have your child give one lego to each stuffed animal, or one cup to each family member.
Occupational Therapist:
When it is just too cold to be outside, make obstacle courses! Move couch cushions and pillows onto the floor and walk or crawl over them. Play ‘Follow the Leader’ and climb in/out of boxes or the laundry basket, crawl over/under/around obstacles. This is a great activity for developing core muscles.
SLP (Speech and Language Pathologist)
If your child makes a speech sound or grammar mistake, say the sentence back to them correctly and emphasize the sound or word they made a mistake on. Your child does not have to copy you, the focus is on hearing a correct model.
Speech sound example:
Child: “Tan you help me?”
Adult: “Yes, I can help you”
Grammar example:
Child: Him really fast
Adult: You’re right, he is really fast!
