Richland celebrates 5 years of 'Leader In Me'
“This gives us an opportunity to showcase all of the great work done by our students and staff,” Principal Nicole Zuerblis said. “We’re excited to show our guests what we’ve been up to and share our success in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and academics.”
Leader in Me is based on the work of Stephen Covey's “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” In the elementary version, Richland teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills to students, and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. Students learn about responsibility, creativity, ownership of learning, goal setting, self-awareness, initiative, communication, integrity, and teamwork.

Outdoor School is back
After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, Outdoor School returned for Strayer Middle School seventh-graders who enjoyed a two-day, one-night stay at Camp Nockamixon.
This tradition, which began in 1974, provides students with “an incredible, unique learning experience that directly and indirectly strengthens classroom learning,” said Dr. Michael Zackon, supervisor of secondary programs.
Daytime activities include:
Up the Creek - Students explore nature with an adventure in the creek
Can U Canoe - Students learn some water activities (canoe, paddleboard, kayak). This is a favorite as almost all of the students end up in the pond!
Show me the Way - Students complete a low ropes course using lots and lots of teamwork!
Take the Bait - Students learn how to fish
The Original "T" - Students make tie-dye Outdoor School shirts with a t-shirt design created by a 7th grader
Get the Point - Students learn about and participate in archery
Get Over it - Students have to problem solve using challenges that include physical, mental, and social!
Where to next? - This is a new activity and students complete a scavenger hunt around the camp
Evening activities include hockey, basketball, kickball, GaGa, relays, crab-ball, and group formations.
Lisa Cravener is the coordinator of Outdoor School and “she is absolutely the best,” Strayer Principal Dr. Jennifer Bubser said. “She is just amazing with organizing the event and keeping everything running smoothly. The students are having a blast.

Meet The Instruments Night gives students the hands-on opportunity to try out band and orchestra instruments before they commit to signing up to learn one the following school year. Students can hold it, learn how to bow, shake, hit, buzz ... whatever the musician action needed to make a sound all while working alongside and with the help of student leaders from the Panther Marching Band and Honors Orchestra.
Orchestra lessons are open to students beginning as early as third grade while band students may sign up for lessons as early as fourth grade in QCSD.
MTI night is generally geared toward elementary students; however music teachers provide beginning band and beginning orchestra opportunities for students to start lessons in grades 6-8, too. So middle school students who have never played a musical instrument still have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument at QCSD.

QCHS grad in the news
Adria Retter, 2019
Swarthmore College women's track & field standout Adria Retter earned All-American status with a third-place finish in the discus throw at the NCAA National Championships.
Adria recorded a top mark of 44.90m on the first throw of the afternoon, which held as the third-best throw of the championships. She recorded two other marks above 44-meters with distances of 44.33m and 44.43m on her third and fourth attempts, respectively. All six of Adria's attempts traveled more than 40 meters.
The junior overcame plenty of adversity this season after suffering a leg injury midway through the outdoor campaign. However, Adria bounced back in a big way as she returned to competition at the Centennial Championships - winning the shot put and placing second in the discus throw. Before suffering the injury, Adria held the top discus throw in the nation and the third-best mark in Centennial Conference history at 46.03m.

Pfaff celebrates Harmony Day
There were posters of various countries in the lobby, and students were given assignments related to each. Students also participated in aboriginal dot art, and an assembly was held for visitors from the Ologundê ensemble, which celebrates the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador, Bahia through a diverse repertoire of music, dance, and martial arts. And in each classroom, teachers spoke about the reasons for Harmony Day.
“Harmony Day is such a fun day of learning and growing at Pfaff,” Principal Dr. Orathia Bradley said. “It has become a really important experience as it certainly aids the children's social development.”

8th-graders, sign up now for AP Boot Camp!
Quakertown Community High School is again offering the highly popular AP Boot Camp for incoming ninth-graders who plan to take AP Human Geography.
The three-day session, scheduled for August 16-18 from 9 AM to noon at QCHS, will strengthen their academic foundations and refine their advanced learning skills. The focus is on team building, time management, AP-level reading, and note-taking skills. By performing the work to pass this college-level course, students learn the habits necessary to succeed in high school. Students will have time to ask questions and work on their Summer Assignments. In addition, students who have previously taken the course will also be attending to discuss their experiences in the class.
The Boot Camp is not a requirement to take AP Human Geography. Students who attend, however, can get more detailed explanations of the types of assignments they will be given during the school year and a clearer grasp of the increased workload that is typical in an AP class.
On the first day, students should bring their Chromebook, paper, and pencils and pens to take notes. Any additional materials needed will be explained at the Boot Camp. Please note, transportation will not be provided to Boot Camp sessions.
The Boot Camp will be taught by Sean Burke (sburke@qcsd.org) and Kevin Laboski (klaboski@qcsd.org). They would like to get an idea of how many students will be attending. If interested, please fill out this form.

Girls Scouts provide sweet surprise
Members of Girl Scout Troop 2782 donated more than 300 cookies to the schools they attend.
Each year, the Troop asks the community to donate cookies/money during their cookie sale to the Hometown Heroes project. In the past, they have donated to local police, local fire departments, St. Luke's, Marine Corp base, SWAT team, and others. This year the girls voted for their schools' employees as their heroes.
The schools thank them for their kindness, hard work, and generosity!
