The Leader In Me - The 7 Habits of Happy Kids
Practice Using the 7 Habits at Home!
As we learn about and practice using the 7 Habits at school, we want to share out activities that families can use to practice the 7 Habits at home. This week our focus is on Habit 5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood.
WHY IS LISTENING ESSENTIAL TO A FAMILY?
Listen Before You Talk!
We all see the world differently. The problem is, we think we see things the same way others do. Communication is important to achieve understanding because no two people see, think, or experience the world the same way. Therefore, there is a great need, especially in families, to seek first to understand what someone is thinking and talk second so we can work to understand one another's point of view. Here are some easy steps to follow to help build this in families.
- Listen without interrupting
- Respect the other person's ideas and feelings
- Look the other person in the eye when listening and talking
- Try to see the other person's point of view
- Listen with your ears, your mind and your heart
"Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply."
- Stephen R. Covey

November Health Tips From Nurse Anna
November - National Diabetes Month
Dear Parents/Guardians,
November is National Diabetes Month, a time to educate communities about diabetes. This year’s focus is on taking action to prevent diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) is too high. It affects about 37 million Americans, including adults and youth. Diabetes can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and it is linked to some types of cancer.
But there’s good news: Taking charge of your health may help prevent diabetes such as planning healthy meals, being physically active and getting enough sleep. Establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a healthy weight are important in reducing your risk of developing diabetes.
Healthy goals can be reached by following the 5-2-1-0 rule each day. Every day we should strive to eat five servings of fruits or vegetables, get two hours or less of screen time per day, move our bodies in a healthy way for one hour every day, and drink zero sugary beverages. If this sounds like too much, start small and slowly increase these important goals into your family’s lifestyle.
Eisenhower students will have hearing and vision screenings November 6th, 7th and 8th. If your student wears glasses/contacts, please remind them to wear them during their screening. Results will be in their backpacks.
Enjoy the beautiful fall weather.
Be well,
Anna Robinette, RN
