NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
19 August 2021
Dear Parents and Staff
I was very privileged to attend the Official Opening of the Angelico Art Exhibition on Tuesday evening. This Exhibition is a wonderful showcase of the artistic talents of students from Catholic schools from around Western Australia. I was very pleased to see on display a number of artworks that had been entered by our children and to be able to point these out to the Executive Director of Catholic Education WA, Dr Debra Sayce. Dr Sayce was particularly impressed by the Nativity that was produced by a group of our Year 6 students. This will certainly become a fixture in our school office leading up to Christmas for many years to come.
Congratulations to all of our children who had their artwork selected for the exhibition. Our Specialist Art Teacher, Mrs Annette Flexman, has an article in today’s newsletter with the names of these children, along with a photo of their work. Make sure you don’t miss it.
CONFIRMATION
With just over a week before they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation our Year Six students are becoming very excited. Last Tuesday Bishop Don Sproxton, who will be Confirming the students, visited our school to speak with the children and assess their readiness to receive the Sacrament. Bishop Don’s comments to me were that the students were “A lively group who asked some very interesting questions.” He said the one that he particularly liked was “Do you need to be a Catholic to become a Bishop in the Catholic Church?” Perhaps one that the teachers will need to cover before future visits!
The final formal step in the children’s preparation is this evening, with the Parent/Child workshop that commences in the Church at 6.00pm tonight.
PERFORMING ARTS
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend our Year 3 Class Choir performance at St Benedict’s Church in Ardross yesterday. I have had the opportunity to read their excellent Report, though, and I am very impressed with the marks and comments given by the very experienced adjudicator, Mrs Estelle Dragun. For Mrs Dragun to have written, “What a beautiful unison sound…..Diction was clear and you sang beautifully” is very high praise and the children, Mr Loiacono and Mrs Evans should be very proud, as am I.
On Friday evening our two dance troupes will be performing at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and I am so pleased to have been able to secure a VIP seat so that I won’t miss a moment of the action.
Next Wednesday, 25 August, our School Choir will be performing at the Vasto Club in Balcatta and I hope to be there to witness their great performance as well.
JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The recent Olympics in Tokyo has certainly been a source of inspiration for our Pre-Primary-Year 2 students who are busily preparing for the upcoming Junior Athletics Carnival to be held at school on Friday 27 August commencing at 8.50am. It is anticipated the carnival will finish at approximately 12.00pm. Good luck to all of our athletes!

PRE-PRIMARY CLASS NEWS
WOW! What a busy first half of the term we are having. We have started art classes with Mrs Flexman, EduDance is off to an incredible start, we are busy learning our games for the upcoming Athletics Carnival and amongst all this we are doing some amazing learning!
English:
In Literacy this term, we have been very busy learning about lots of new and exciting books. Our focus this term is on Fairy Tales and we have loved reading about the “Three Little Pigs” and “Little Red Riding Hood”. We can’t wait to read about “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, as well as other classic stories.
Our writing has come such a long way and we are starting to create longer sentences that are more descriptive. Our focus is on using lowercase letters when writing and remembering our finger spaces between words.
We are reading superstars in Pre-Primary. We are doing a fantastic job of sounding out trickier words and have started to learn more digraphs and blends. We cannot wait to read more exciting and interesting texts!
Mathematics
We have been having so much fun in maths!
Our biggest focus this term has been learning about subtraction. One of our favourite activities was setting up a mini bowling set and having a go at bowling down the pins and making a subtraction sum out of it. Check out some of our amazing work below:
This week we have started to look at 3D shapes. The other day we went for a walk around the school, and we were very surprised with the many 3D shapes that we could find. In the coming weeks we will start to look at capacity. This should be lots of fun!
Space
This term we have had a space play corner set up in our classrooms. We have loved going to outer space each day, looking through telescopes and dressing up as astronauts. Check out some of our photos:
We are having a ball in Pre Primary and are becoming confident and capable learners.
We look forward to the rest of Term 3.

State Primary Schools Cross Country Championship
Last Thursday, Eva (4M) & Isla (5M) competed at the State Primary Schools Cross Country Championship held at UWA Park. This brought together thousands of students from various schools in Perth and regional areas. The girls both competed in a 2.5km race.
Eva came in 17th place in the Year 4 Girls race. Isla finished in 10th place in the Year 5 Girls race. We would like to congratulate both girls on their amazing efforts competing against over 300 other runners in their respective races. This is a fantastic achievement and we look forward to possibly having more students from Notre Dame CPS participating in this event next year.

OSHC
Last week we were blessed with a few warm, sunny days. At OSHC, we finally had the opportunity to play outside a couple of afternoons. Some of us enjoyed a good game of footy, while others played handball in small groups. The Year 1 boys and girls even had a go at skipping rope races against the educator!
In the construction area, we enjoyed building schools, gardens and zoos with Lego or Duplo. We used Mobilo, magnetic blocks and tiles either on their own or combined, to build cars, houses and mobile homes. Creatively, we decided a train station could be made with wooden Domino tiles for our favourite train track play.
We also made our own toys and fidgets this week at the arts and craft table. We built paper planes and gliders and raced them to see whose would fly the highest and the farthest. We put rice grains into a balloon and it became a stress ball! We made our own POP-It's with colourful cards. We even learnt how to make an origami bay blade.
Rubiks cube, memory cards, free drawing, Connect 4, story time, hide and find... the fun went on and on!
This week, we are expecting more fine weather, which means more outside play! Yay! Meanwhile at OSHC, we'll get busy making something special for our dads as Fathers' Day fast approaching!
