The Graduate School Newsletter
Fall 2023
Greetings and happy fall semester here at Hood College! To all of our new and returning graduate students, I wish you a warm Hood Hello, and I hope that your first class went well this week. In this issue, you will find features about inspiring initiatives for YOU, our students.
Last week’s new-student orientation events were exciting as we welcome more than 200 new graduate students this spring hailing from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, India, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Brazil, Myanmar, Ireland and of course, beautiful Frederick and nearby locales. Such events remind me of our team’s central goal: to serve and support all of our graduate students, regardless of your hometown, background or current professional/personal challenges.
Please do not hesitate to let our team know how we can improve your time here at Hood. We have personnel dedicated to every facet of your success from orientation and holistic wellness to degree progress and career development, so use your Hood resources early and often. Best wishes for a successful fall semester, and thank you for choosing Hood College—you belong HERE!

Accessibility Services Ensures Grad-Student Success
Shaun Hoppel started as director of accessibility services on May 1, 2023. Shaun has over ten years of experience supporting students with disabilities in higher education and is excited to support students with accommodation at Hood College. Graduate students who may benefit from accommodation are strongly encouraged to meet with accessibility services to discuss setting up an accommodation plan. If you have ever received accommodation in another educational setting, you likely qualify for services at Hood College. If you are not sure you are eligible, the accessibility services office can help you determine that and navigate the accommodation process. Please reach out to accessibilityservices@hood.edu with any questions or use the below QR code to book an information session.

We have so many exciting opportunities happening this semester. Our affinity nights, which were newly introduced last Spring, will be back this Fall! Whether this is your first semester or you are returning for your third year, we hope you had a wonderful summer and are getting geared up to start a new year. New things can be exciting and energizing, but they can be a little (or very!) scary, too. Transitions are hard, and it’s common for us to feel more stress, anxiety, and worry during times of change. If the transitions in your life are causing you stress, here are some things to try:
Find some consistency: In a world that seems full of change, little pieces of routine can be grounding and comforting. Try to notice opportunities to inject some predictability into your day, whether that be a morning or evening routine, time spent exercising your mind or body, or time spent talking to a friend or family member on your way to campus. Even though some of your day might be new and unfamiliar, this will give you predictable pieces to hold onto!
Practice self-care: Change is tiring, both physically and mentally. All of the new situations you’re finding yourself in put stress on your mind and body as they try to adapt and learn how to navigate this new environment. Take some time to be gentle towards yourself by getting good sleep, feeding and nourishing your body, and taking time to relax.
Embrace your community: Here on campus, all of us are going through this season of change together, whether it’s our first year on campus or our fiftieth. The start of the new academic year brings new challenges and transitions for everyone. Don’t be afraid to reach out for that little extra support as you adjust!
Counseling Services is ready and eager to support you as you make your return to campus or the virtual classroom. Drop in during one of our open walk-in hours (which are offered in-person, via phone or video), or check our website at www.hood.edu/counseling to learn more about how we can help!
