October 9

LOHS Families,
Kicking off with the parade and student activities night this past Sunday, Homecoming Week 2023 is off and running! It is a time when we ask students to double down on school spirit and connecting with LOHS. A time where we hopefully get to see some familiar faces of visiting alumni and relive some cherished memories. Ideally, it is a time that we all get connected, have some fun, and remember that we are part of an incredible community.
To all Dragons – Have a great Homecoming Week. Please stay safe, and as always, Protect the Thunder!

Attendance Information
SCHOOL MESSENGER UPDATE
Attention LOHS Parents:
We will once again be utilizing School Dismissal Manager (SDM), a program for parents to communicate early student dismissals. LOHS has successfully used the SDM program the last few years. It is accessible on either computer or smartphone, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request without calling the school.
On approximately October 2, you should have received communication from School Dismissal Manager with additional details. Parents are encouraged to check their designated email accounts. Also, be advised the message might be redirected to your “junk” folders. The welcome email from SDM provides all relevant information necessary to activate and begin using your account.
Whenever children are brought into group settings, there is a chance for diseases to spread. Children must follow the Michigan state vaccine laws to attend school. For more information about vaccines and waivers, please visit LOCS Central enrollment, or contact Mrs. Patricia Humes, the attendance secretary.
Guided After School program (GAP) that offers various clubs for our students at Lake Orion High School. Each club is led by our outstanding staff at LOHS. All after school clubs will abide by Lake Orion High School rules and current policies. See flyers below for a few featured GAP clubs.
How to Sign up for GAP:
- Fill out the GAP form and pay the GAP fee in order to participate in all GAP clubs.
- Students are eligible for all clubs after they pay for one. THIS IS ONLY FOR GAP CLUBS.
- Register for GAP clubs with Mr. Kimball or online with the links below.

Distinguished Dragon
Thank you for taking the time to recognize one of Lake Orion Community Schools' staff members for their excellence.
The intent of the Distinguished Dragon program is to ensure that staff members who go above and beyond their regular duties are appreciated. The additional effort or support can range from helping an individual to helping a group or any effort that seems worthy of praise.
The staff member can be nominated by a student, parent, community member or even their own colleague. We ask for the submitter's name and contact information to follow up with specific questions if necessary.
Please complete the form entirely so the individual can be appropriately honored for their contributions.
Be sure to apply for Free and Reduced Benefits online at the lakeorion.familyportal.cloud. Eligibility for other programs (including P-EBT) are based on Free and Reduced status but you MUST complete a “Sharing Permissions” form for the information to be shared with specified program. You must apply for the Free/Reduced benefit every school year. Complete one application per household. You will be notified by email if you qualify.
If you qualified for a free or reduced-price meal last year, we will use last year’s eligibility for the first 30 operating days.
Solicitud de las Comidas Escolares Gratis oa Precio Reducido (Free or Reduced Price Lunch Application in Spanish).
Please Note: We highly encourage all families to fill out this form. Many of the supplemental grants and federal aid our school district receives are based on the total approved free and reduced meal applications. These funds enhance the educational opportunities of our students.
Food Deliveries
Students who choose to DoorDash, GrubHub or have food deliveries to the high school may NOT retrieve their order until their scheduled lunch period on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday as to not disrupt their class environment.
Wednesdays we will not allow food deliveries to the building during the school day. Students coming from OSTC MUST PLAN ACCORDINGLY, especially on Homeroom days.
Please note, all students receive a free breakfast and lunch through food services. On Wednesdays breakfast is served and the snack bar and school store are both open.

Senior Interviews
Dear Lake Orion Community,
Did you know that a senior interview is a graduation requirement for the Personal Finance class at LOHS? Each senior student sits in a panel interview, prepared with a portfolio, ready to discuss their skills, current education and plans for the future. This is an important life skill for our students and we need the help of our community to make these panels an authentic and meaningful experience. In the past, volunteers have been retirees, business owners, parents, grandparents, and community members.
First quarter senior interviews will take place on October 16, 17, 19 and 20. There is no preparation required as we provide all detailed instructions and questions. Volunteering for just one session would help our program immensely and volunteers always walk out feeling better about the teenage generation because of the time spent with our students!

College and Military Information (Including Opt-Out)
Continuing through the month of October, LOHS will be hosting admissions recruiter visits from a variety of colleges, universities, trade schools, and the military service. These informational seminars are scheduled during the school day and are available to Juniors and Seniors.
A current, chronological listing will be provided to your students and will be updated on a weekly basis. To register for a visit, students complete a form while logged into their LOCS (Microsoft) account. As more institutions are added, updates will be posted.
On the day or morning prior, students are asked to visit the Career Center to receive a pass that will excuse them from class. Be advised that students are responsible for any assigned work and the opportunity to miss class is at the discretion of the teacher.
Some institutions may also be offering an on-site meeting that provide the possibility of an immediate decision regarding their college application.
LOHS is obligated to provide basic directory information to military recruiters. Please email Tara Hall (tara.hall@lok12.org) directly if you would prefer to opt-out of providing that information. Provide your students’ first and last name as well as their year of graduation in the email.

School Election Information - Milage
Lake Orion Community Schools will have two milage proposals on the February/March presidential primary ballot, each designed to maintain the current tax levies. One will be for the 10-year operational millage, which the state of Michigan requires every public school district to pass to receive full foundation allowance for each student. The second proposal is to replace the 10-year sinking fund, which pays for infrastructure repairs (parking lots, HVAC, computers, etc.) throughout the district. Information about the millage proposals, including Frequently Asked Questions, is located on the School Election Information page.
