Help Us Create a Modernized Ida B. Wells High School
Dear Ida B. Wells High School & Ida B. Wells Feeder School Families,
The comprehensive planning process for the modernization of historic Ida B. Wells High School
is getting underway. PPS is seeking a diverse range of engaged citizens who can positively
contribute to the process of creating a next generation high school through the Ida B. Wells
Comprehensive Planning Committee (CPC). View the Ida B. Wells CPC flyer
Ida B. Wells Comprehensive Planning Committee Mission
The goal of the Ida B. Wells CPC is to develop an equitable and integrated comprehensive plan for
a modernized Ida B. Wells High School through authentic community engagement. It will include
students, parents, teachers, alumni, administrators, PPS staff, partners, community representatives
and a school board member.
The CPC collects and synthesizes community-wide input and collaborates around the evolving
project details with other members in the Ida B. Wells community. While CPC members are not
tasked with making final decisions, their input is crucial in creating a comprehensive plan that the
entire community can be proud of.
Join the Ida B. Wells Comprehensive Planning Committee (CPC)
To apply please visit the Ida B. Wells modernization website at https://www.pps.net/IdaBWellsBond
Applications are available in all PPS supported languages. Paper applications will also be available at Ida B. Wells High School and upon request. Interested candidates should plan on meeting about
once a month in the evenings for about 5 to 6 months. The CPC application process will remain
open until late-September. The first meeting will take place in early October.
Other Engagement Opportunities
If you are unable to join the CPC, you will still have opportunities to make your voice heard at
upcoming Design Workshops and Open Houses. Dates will be announced on the website.
Ida B. Wells Modernization Schedule
Planning and Design is set to begin in early fall of 2023 with the development of a Ida B. Wells
Comprehensive Plan. The Planning and Design phase will continue over the next two years. Funding
for the construction of a modernized Ida B. Wells would need to come from a future bond measure.
Get involved and stay informed
The Ida B. Wells modernization website will keep you updated on the latest developments and
provide a list of upcoming engagement opportunities. You can also join the Ida B. Wells
Modernization project mailing list at wellsbond@pps.net. Thank you for helping us create a
modernized Ida B. Wells High School for the 21st century.
2024 Graduation
Our graduation at Providence Park is drafted to be Monday June 3 at 7:30pm. This draft schedule will be finalized by Providence Park in January 2024 pending Thorns' and Timbers' schedules.
PreACT for Sophomores (during the school day) and PSAT for Juniors (on a Saturday)
On Wednesday, October 18th, sophomores will take the PreACT. There is no cost to sophomores. The PreACT helps students prepare for college and careers. Please make sure your student gets a good night’s sleep and breakfast before the test. If you have questions, please contact your child’s school counselor.
In prior years, sophomores took the PSAT. Beginning 2022-23, the Oregon Department of Education changed the required assessment from the PSAT to the PreACT.

College Entrance Exams and Admissions
The landscape of college admissions testing is murky at best since Covid shut down testing opportunities and many schools became test-optional. Here is information to help shed some light on the current standardized testing environment and whether to re-test and/or send scores to colleges.
Sources to use when gathering information on college admissions testing:
- College website itself - look at the admissions page for colleges you are thinking about applying to.
- FairTest.org - The National Center for Fair & Open Testing (FairTest) advances quality education and equal opportunity by promoting fair, open, valid and educationally beneficial evaluations of students, teachers and schools.
A couple articles about the trends in college admissions in 2023:
Some facts to be aware of:
- All of the colleges in Oregon are currently test-optional. Public universities in our state are permanently test-optional as are many of the private schools. Reed College is test-blind.
- If you are a good standardized test taker, a good test score can help your chances for admission (see above articles for more information).
- More than 80% of colleges are currently test-optional or blind.
News from our Social Worker
l
Confidential Advocate
IBW will have a new confidential advocate in our building beginning this upcoming week! Katie Mahaffie of Raphael House of Portland will be here on Wednesdays every week and will be available to support students individually, as well as offer resources, present curriculum in classrooms and more!
As of 2022, every comprehensive PPS high school has (at least) one advocate within the building 1 day a week. We encourage PPS high school students of all genders who experience sexual harassment or assault, domestic or teen dating violence, and/or harassment based on gender identity or sexual orientation to connect with a confidential advocate as soon as you are able. While they do not work for PPS, advocates work closely with school administrators, counselors, and social workers and are familiar with PPS policies and procedures, including Title IX investigations.
Students may also call the PPS student hotline - text or call - (503) 809-4357. Available in English and Spanish.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month.
National Suicide Prevention month is used for raising awareness on this highly stigmatized topic. This month is also used to spread hope via sharing vital information to people affected by suicide. As a school, we want to ensure our students and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help. Findings suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide reduces suicidal ideation. For info and resources #BeThe1To
If you feel you have a student who may need some additional support, you can reach out to myself or our counselors.
