Weekly Updates
Dear Hózhó Families,
Ride the Bus Day - If you are signed up for the bus, please do so this Wednesday, February 14th. Attendance on this day determines our funding for the transportation department we've been so grateful to have this year!
Kindergarten Enrollment - Kindergarten enrollment for the 2024-25 school year starts February 1st. Please share this info with friends or family who may wish to enroll. If you have a sibling to enroll, please visit the website between Feb 1-29, 2024, to complete the Letter of Intent to Enroll documentation. Even though siblings have priority, the spot could go to another student if we do not have enrollment documentation filled out. Enrollment and Lottery Information - Hózhó Academy (hozhoacademy.org)
Lunch During Lent - The school menu will have meatless Fridays during Lent from Feb. 14th to Mar 30th. On Ash Wednesday (Feb 14th), Grilled Cheese sandwiches will be available upon request for those observing Lent.
Read-A-Thon - We look forward to starting our yearly Read-a-thon on March 1st!

Poetry Recitation
Classes take turns reciting poetry during the morning assembly. This experience builds confidence and develops their understanding of the beauty of language and literature.

Art Class Highlight
Forth Grade
Fourth grade finished their drawings of Thomas Jefferson's famous home, Monticello. These students are really developing an eye for drawing from site. These pieces turned out great.
Third Grade
Third grade is just beginning their watercolor master copies of Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night. This week they did their drawing on watercolor paper. Next week they will paint. They will be working on these pieces for the next two weeks.
Literacy Corner by Elise Farrel
If you missed last week's literacy corner, we are discussing when we double a consonant in the English language. Last week, we talked about the first two rules that have us doubling consonants.
Today, we are looking at the two more complex rules, the 1-1-1 and the 2-1-1 rules.

The 1-1-1 rules states: when adding a suffix ending to a one syllable word ending with one vowel and one consonant, double the last consonant.
Let's use the word hop to break this down. First, we confirm that it is a one syllable word. Then, say we want to add suffix ending –ing to the word hop. We identify that hop ends with one vowel (o) and one consonant (p), therefore, we double the consonant. The result, is hopping. Other examples would be...

The 2-1-1 rule is tricky, but similar to the 1-1-1: When adding a vowel suffix to a two or more syllable word ending with one vowel and one consonant, double the last consonant IF the accent is on the last syllable UNLESS the suffix throws the accent to another syllable.
This rule is used for multisyllable words that end with one vowel and one consonant. However, we only double the consonant if the accent is on the last syllable. When we say accent, we are refering to the syllable most emphasized. Here is an example;
The word admit is a multi-syllable word (ad*mit) with the emphasis, or accent on the second syllable (adMIT, not ADmit). Say we want to make it past tense so we add –ed making it ad*mit*ed. The emphasis is still on that last syllable of the base word so we double the consonant, admitted.
Another example would be the word control:
Con*TROL
Con*TROL*ing

An example where we would not double the consonant is the word prefer. The last syllable is emphasized (pre*FERRED). However, when adding the suffix ending –ence, that accent shifts to the first syllable, PRE*fer*ence so we do not double the consonant. However, we do when the suffix ending it –ed because the accent is still in that last syllable pre*FERRed (we do not say PREferred).
And that concludes the four reasons we double a consonant in a word! It really goes to show just how much depth the English language has.

How amazing is it that a queen has published a book? And what a perfect book it is to kick off the month of love. This is a great time to read books that encompass the virtue of compassion. This book tells the story of two best friends from two different cultures who do everything together. Everything that is, except eat the same lunch at school. Can something so small take a toll on their friendship?
