K-6 students are learning about the Toolbox Project and how the 12 tools in our toolbox can help us problem solve, regulate emotions and get along with others on a daily basis. Students that re K-3 will be coloring and decorating their toolboxes, and they will cut each individual tool out as they are introduced. Students that are 4-6 will be making lanyards and adding to them as they learn about each tool.
This month students will be learning about Respect. Respect is the practice of honoring and showing consideration and value to people, property, the environment, and yourself; to treat others well even if they look, act, or believe different than you do. Students will understand how they can show acts of respect inside and outside of school. Students will learn how their 12 tools assists them in practicing respect towards others. Students will identify more than one Toolbox tool that they can use to practice respect.

Games
Games like "Simon Says" and "Follow the Leader" are great ways to get kids engaged and excited about learning about respect. These games can be adapted to teach students about respecting authority figures and peers.
Storytelling
Storytelling gives students the opportunity to come up with their own stories about showing respect or being respectful at school or home. The student can share their story and then follow it up with discussions on why it is important for them to act respectfully in that situation.
Role-Playing
Role-playing is a great way to teach students about respect. Have students act out scenarios in which someone needs to show respect (e.g. someone is new in class or disagreeing on a topic). Once they have acted out these scenarios, have a discussion on what was done well and what could be improved upon. This helps students understand how their behaviors affects others and how to act in similar situations in real life.
