Noon Message From Dr. Hudson
August 21, 2023

Cedar Hill ISD Families,
Thank you for a successful first week of school! Your support, attendance and patience is greatly appreciated!
At tonight's regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting, the Board is expected call for a voter approved tax rate election for the November 7th ballot. A Voter Approved Tax Ratification Election (VATRE) is an election required by the State Legislature to ask voters to approve a modified tax rate to increase revenue for teachers and staff which directly impacts classroom instruction.
With the additional funds, CHISD would increase the starting pay for teachers, retain veteran teachers, and provide the funds to be fully compliant with House Bill 3, the necessary, yet minimally funded mandate approved by the Texas Legislature earlier this year which requires an armed police officer at every public school campus.
While the VATRE is the most crucial component, CHISD is working to attract – and retain educators.
District exit survey data shows, the top three reasons CHISD teachers leave the district is for an increase in pay, a career change or a family circumstance. We all know, and research confirms, that qualified teachers have the largest impact on a child's success in the classroom.
I encourage you to attend tonight's meeting or watch the live stream. The public portion of the meeting starts at 7:30pm in the Turk Canady Meeting Room located at 285 Uptown.
Dr. Gerald B. Hudson
Superintendent
In Texas, there is no specific mandated temperature at which students are not allowed to play
outside on the playground. However, many school districts across the state follow general
guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of students during extreme weather conditions,
including high temperatures.
Generally, when the temperature reaches around 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius) or
higher, schools may consider limiting or restricting outdoor activities to prevent heat-related
illnesses. This is in line with recommendations from organizations like the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
It's important for schools to consider not only the temperature but also factors such as
humidity, air quality, and the duration of time students would be exposed to the outdoor
conditions. Schools often have their own policies and procedures in place to make informed
decisions about outdoor activities based on local weather conditions.
Cedar Hill will follow the suggested Heat guidelines:
- The max air temperature for outside play is 97, with a relative humidity of 55-59%.
