D93 Weekly Family Update

Reminder: No school on Monday for elementary students.

All middle school and high school students are expected to attend classes in person for at least the first two weeks of the trimester.

This month, we are celebrating our cornerstone of learning and literacy. We would love to hear who has helped your child to develop a love of learning or reading. Please go to d93.org/literacy_nomination to tell us who has exemplified this cornerstone.

Tis the season to be thinking about emergency closures. While we monitor forecasts regularly for potential situations that could cause schools to close, we have learned to not make decisions for emergency closures based solely on forecasted weather conditions. Instead, there are several district employees who begin driving roads between 4:30 and 5:00 am to evaluate the conditions of our roads and the outside temperatures.

When we experience difficult weather conditions, we have a conference call around 5:30 am to evaluate conditions across the District and decide whether or not to close schools. If we decide to close schools, we will send a message home to families as a text, email, and phone call. We will also post the information on our school web pages and social media channels, and notify the media. Our goal is to communicate this information by 6:00 am.

Our cold weather policy states that we will have outdoor recess as long as temperatures remain above zero degrees Fahrenheit. We also consider the wind chill when deciding whether to hold indoor recess. Because few of our elementary schools have dedicated gym space, indoor recess presents its own set of unique challenges for students and teachers. Please be sure to send your children with gloves and hats and warm coats to be ready for the cold temperatures. If your children do not have warm outdoor clothing, please let your school's counselor know so that we can find community resources to help.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Thought Exchange for elementary collaboration days. Families and teachers both showed the strongest support to continue with our current schedule with the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Mondays as full-day collaboration days. Purposity comes from the core belief that humanity finds purpose through generosity—Purposity. The Purposity app provides a way for community members to help those in need in our own schools.

District and school staff who support students who are homeless, from migrant families, and in other challenging situations post their needs to the Purposity app. Users can scroll through the needs and see if they’d like to purchase any of the items. If they choose to purchase something, it takes them directly to the item on Amazon. They put the item in their cart and check out. It takes less than two minutes to help a student in need. Once the item is received, the user will get a thank you from either the counselor, homeless liaison, or migrant liaison. Bonneville Joint School District 93 stands in solidarity with the University of Idaho during this difficult time. As a symbol of this united support, all outside athletic field lights in D93 were turned on from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 to coincide with the University of Idaho’s candlelight vigil. We continue to keep the entire Vandal family in our thoughts as we collectively cope with this tragic loss.

The Idaho Falls Elks Lodge #1087 is hosting the Elks National Hoop Shoot this Saturday Dec. 3 at the Idaho Falls YMCA.

Registration starts at 10:00 with the competition starting at 10:30.

Youth ages 8-13 (girls and boys, 3 winners from each) advance through the local lodge contest, district, state, regionals and on to the National Finals in Chicago, IL. Six national champions will have their names and photos displayed at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. For additional information visit elks.org/hoopshoot.
