Walnut High School students have used their in-depth knowledge of computers to log into an elite level of cybersecurity success.

Advisor Nick Blackford is leading a team that includes Daniel Ji, Zhenkai Weng, Jason Wang, Eric Wang, Lucas He, and Joshua Hsu. They currently rank 7th in the nation out of 2,951 teams and earned an all expense paid trip to the National Finals in Bethesda, Maryland March 17-21, 2022.

The National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, also known as CyberPatriot, challenges youth to find and fix cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems. Teams that create the safest and most reliable computer systems win each contest.

Each team receives a set of virtual operating systems and must find and fix potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities that pop up. They must repair these vulnerabilities while maintaining critical computer services for the virtual company. They earn points for handling these tasks in a quick, complete, and professional manner.

The Walnut High School Science Bowl team made the Top 8 at the Jan. 22 regional competition, which marked the 30th year NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California has hosted the tournament. The event brings together science- and math-minded high schoolers from across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Santa Barbara counties.

The Walnut High Science Bowl team members are Lucas He, Renee Chang, Serena Huang, Surya Donath, and Patrick Wang.

The team members are quizzed at a first-year college level in biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, energy, math, and physics in a fast-paced verbal format.

Our Winter Formal Dance is set for Saturday, January 29, at 5:00 pm. The dance will be held at the Rumba Room Live in Anaheim. The address is 400 Disney Way #201 Anaheim, CA 92802.

Here are important rules and expectations to review before attending the dance:

• Please upload your vaccination card or negative test result by CLICKING HERE. The form is open, so please upload it as soon as possible.
• Please bring a screenshot on your phone of your negative test result or proof of vaccination to the dance when checking in. (At-home tests are acceptable)
• Non-WHS students (guest passes) must provide proof as well. Please send them the form if you plan to bring a guest and have them bring a copy on their phone.
• Entrance into the dance opens at 5:00 pm.
• Students must bring their ID to be scanned into the dance.
• Students must arrive no later than 6:30 pm.
• Parking is available in the parking garage by Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
• Parking is free for the first hour, then $3/ hour.
• The venue is on Level 2
• Pick up and Drop off is in front of the venue on Disney Way.
• Students may begin leaving the dance at 7:00 pm.
• Interquest K9 Services will do a bag check upon entering the dance.
• The following items are not allowed into the dance: bottles, containers, liquids, food, gum, pepper spray, lighters, sharp objects, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, drug paraphernalia, and markers.
• School rules will still be implemented. If any school rules are violated, parents will be notified, and consequences will be applied.
• Masks must be worn at all times unless you are eating or drinking.
• Please make arrangements to leave or be picked up by 9:00 pm.

Give blood and save lives this Thursday, February 3rd, from 7:45 am-1:15 pm in the MPR. Please walk in with a parental consent form and permission card handed out by your teacher.

THANK YOU to our students and staff for participating in the Lockdown drill on Tuesday. Your support during this and every drill, as well as real emergencies, is crucial to the safety of our staff and students. In a real crisis, it will be all hands on deck. We will support each other and our students. Flexibility and communication are vital. Our goal is to keep everyone safe. Our hard work to prepare and practice emergency procedures will help us meet our goal.

Walnut High School partnered with the Walnut Sheriff Department to talk about seeing and identifying threats on our campus and the run-hide-fight protocol.

Attention students & teachers! WVWD’s “Water is Life” Virtual Poster Art Contest has officially begun! All artwork must be submitted online by Monday, April 4, 2022.

The Walnut Valley Rotary Club has a speech contest for local high schools in (mid to late) February.

The contest will be 100% over Zoom for safety concerns. Each contestant will receive a prize that day (TBD), and the first-place winner can move on to the district final.

Each speech should be within a 5-7 minute timeframe and will be judged on the Rotary guiding principles

1. Is it the Truth?

2. Is it Fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships

4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned.

WHAT TO BRING:

We are offering FREE After School tutoring on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays after school from 3:00 - 4:30 pm in the library starting next week. Tutors will be available in all content areas to help our students with homework, study for tests, or anything they need!

Our GLCs held a College Application and Financial Aid Information Night over YouTube Live. Below the video contains the Frequently Asked Questions during Financial Aid Night 2021.

This short video provides a variety of College and Career Readiness Resources for this years Seniors.

Students must attend every class, every day, and be on time. In order to receive daily credit, students are to bring all necessary materials to class. Students will not be excused from class to get materials. Homework and class assignments are to be completed on time and to the best of the student’s ability. Only behaviors befitting the learning environment are acceptable. Students are to comply with all reasonable requests of any staff member. Dress code will be enforced.

Please remember that attendance counts, every period, every day. Students will be marked absent if they are not at the beginning of each period to verify their attendance.

All single-period absences will need to be reconciled through the attendance office by the student. If marked absent, students will receive an email from the attendance office notifying them that they have been marked absent. The notification will include the date and period of the absence. The student will need to contact the Attendance Department to make any necessary corrections to their individual period attendance. For full-day absences, a parent/guardian must contact the attendance office by the end of the day.

Due to safety concerns, we DO NOT accept student lunches in the office. We understand the importance of student nutrition, but we encourage students to either purchase lunch at school or bring their lunch from home. Food, drinks, or other items are NOT to be passed to students through the fence. This is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

Please Note: Parents can now access the Food Services Department from our website under the Parents tab. On that page, parents can set up and deposit funds into their student's lunch account for purchasing lunch on campus.
