Do you know the 3 main areas School Counselors work with students are …
Academic - talk about any academic concerns, study plans, organizational skills, academic plans, Tech Center, AP classes, and more.
Personal/Social - concerns with friendships, family, other interpersonal concerns, anxiety, stress, coping skills and more
Career/College - deciding after high school plans and what to do when students are in high school to make those plans happen. Will a student go to trade school? 2 or 4 year college? Military? Apprenticeship? Other?
We meet with students during individual appointments, by conducting small groups, and when visiting classrooms. We also talk with parents/guardians on the phone and in person.
SCHEDULE CHANGES for next school year -
Sometimes students want to ask their school counselor about a possible schedule change because they no longer need a class or are in the wrong class, etc. Note that the time period for students to discuss a possible change will be different starting next school year.
Possible schedule changes for the entire school year can be discussed and requested with your school counselor at Orientation.
For Trimester 1 requests, they need to be made at Orientation and up through the 1st Day of School.
For Trimesters 2 and 3, changes for the trimester need to be requested up through the Friday before Exam Week of the prior trimester.
Test Out Options
High school credit shall be granted in any course to a student enrolled in high school but not enrolled in the course who exhibits a reasonable level of mastery of the course’s subject matter. To earn credit for Testing Out, a student must earn a C+ or higher on a final examination. Credit earned shall be based on a “pass” grade and shall not be included in the computation of the student’s grade point average for any purpose. Additional information can be found in the Student Handbook. The dates for next school year are August 8, 2023; November 7, 2023; February 23, 2024. Students should meet with their school counselor well in advance of these dates so that testing can be arranged.
SENIORS
SENIORS - BEFORE you GRADUATE ...
If attending a college next fall, you need to request that your Final Transcript be sent to your college. It is time to do this NOW - and it will be sent after your final grades are in.
This needs to happen before your last day of school (May 24), because after graduation, there is a fee to send a transcript - right now it is STILL FREE because you are a high school student. (there is a small fee later) You need to do this now also because the school Office is not open the entire summer, and your request will not be sent if the Office is closed.
So, to request your Final Transcript:
1) go onto Parchment
2) request transcripts be sent by selecting "HOLD FOR GRADES" in the drop down menu
3) if you have any questions, see Mrs. Tew in the Office
Seniors, May 1 is known as “Decision Day.” On this date, it is common for seniors to let their college of choice know if they are going to attend that particular college in the fall. However, this does not mean that students can not continue to apply to a college. If you have not applied to college and are still considering it, please reach out to the college of your choice, talk to their admissions representative, and apply. Some colleges accept students even into August.
- Michigan Achievement Scholarship - Many students in the state will qualify for this new scholarship the state of Michigan has established for Seniors. Students need to complete the FAFSA first. Go to the following website to get started and for more information: getmimoney.org
Here is the link to the Senior Packet that was distributed at the Senior Meeting.
Seniors and Senior Parents/Guardians —- Have you already been accepted to colleges and are you receiving Financial Aid letters from them indicating your financial options? Not all letters are the same - different colleges have different forms/options, and each one can be a little confusing if you are not familiar with the format of those letters. See your school counselor who can help you review them and understand what you are being offered, so you can make an informed decision.
Seniors - Continue or start completing your college and trade school applications! See your school counselor to ask questions about how to get started.
FAFSA - Students applying to 2-year colleges, 4-year colleges, and trade schools are encouraged to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be eligible for scholarships, grants, and federal aid. Most post-secondary schools participate with federal student aid programs, however, you can check with each school to be certain. Schools also sometimes use the FAFSA information to determine eligibility for their own in-house scholarships and grants. The FAFSA opens online Oct 1 for families to complete - the sooner you complete the more opportunities students are eligible for. See your school counselor with questions. https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out/help
JUNIORS
- Juniors, It is time to explore colleges! This is an excellent time to start touring the colleges you are considering applying to this fall. Create a list of 3-5 colleges you would like to go visit. Talk with your parents and friends and come up with a plan to visit these colleges over the next couple of months. Call or look on the college websites to see if you need to sign-up for a tour or if you can just stop in for a tour anytime. Taking a campus tour will give you a lot of information that you can’t learn by looking at a university’s website.
