PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We have had a fantastic first week of school! I want to thank all of the teachers and staff who have worked hard to prepare their classrooms and spaces for students to learn. In addition, thank you parents and guardians for all of your support to ensure we are off to a great start. Just a reminder the school day is from 8:20 am to 3:50 pm each day and attendance each day is critical for all students.
A couple of reminders. Agendas are a required school supply and can be purchased during lunches for $4 each. In addition students need to come to school in Bedichek Standardized dress code every day. Remember the dress code policy is 6th grade in a solid dark green shirt, 7th grade in a solid white shirt and 8th grade in a solid black shirt. Please see our website for full-dress code information. We will start making phone calls and detentions for not being in dress code starting Monday. Please reach out if you need assistance with dress code or agendas.
Parent support is needed as we begin building our PTA and Community Advisory Council. Please reach out to our Parent Support, Ms. Martinez at 512-414-3265 extension 59752; if you are interested in supporting Bedichek by participating in these organizations.
I am looking forward to a fantastic school year!
Thanks,
Ms. Atkinson

New State Mandates Regarding School Safety and Discipline
1. Last spring, the Texas Legislature passed a new law, HB 3, requiring all Texas school districts to have at least one armed security officer at every campus during school hours.
Austin ISD is NOT considering arming teachers or other district employees outside of Austin ISD Police Department to comply with the law.
We are planning to hire more than 70 new SRO’s to cover all 78 elementary campuses, plus associated support staff, to meet the new requirements.
The board is required to approve the required number of SROs per campus. They are anticipated to adopt this plan at their August 31 voting meeting.
2. A new state law, HB 114, mandates that ALL e-cigarettes (THC and Tobacco) are prohibited at or near public schools and school events.
House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP) if the student possesses, uses, is under the influence of, sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette while on campus, within 300 feet of school property, or at a school-related event.
Under Austin ISD guidelines, this is a 20-day DAEP placement.
3. To further our efforts to protect students from firearms, and as a courtesy to our families, Austin ISD is informing families of the legal obligations to protect minors from negligent gun storage.
Texas State Law 46.13 indicates that a person commits an offense if a child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm and the person with criminal negligence: failed to secure the firearm; or left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access.
Campus Safety Measures
If you see any dangerous situation for our campus please call 911 or you may call our Austin ISD Police dispatch at 512-414-1703.
