WHILE THE WORLD IS SLEEPING
While the world is sleeping
The moon is sweeping
A searchlight for schemes
A spotlight for dreams
The raccoon feasts
With the genteel beasts
While cricket choir’s song
Enlivens the throng
Foxes dress in their best
Red furs ‘round their chests
The whole world to see
On their midnight spree
Dew coats the grassy ground
The leafy stalks are drowned
The smallest insect floats above
Emitting lightning made of love
Owls mourn too late
Over the mice that they ate
And bats swoop on high
With a chirp of goodbye
For it’s morning once more
As sun spills to the floor
Now the creatures away
As humans start the day

BEACH OF LOST LOVE
When I die
Take my shell to the place where hearts are buried
Near the waves
And the soft humming breeze
Rest me in the ground
As the sand claims my carapace
Watch as my bosom grows
Bearing our eternal love
But store my soul in your ribcage
And tie yours to mine with a bow
The beach of lost love
Will claim the organs of many a lost bedfellow
So rest my heart
Where the sea foam froths

IT'S MY TURN TODAY
The 6 o’ clock alarm
Rings through my room
I sit up and
Stare into the dim-ness
It’s my turn today
My mom has a special breakfast for me
So I gift her a “thank you”
She looks at me and
Puts a finger to her lips
She doesn’t want me to use them all up because
It’s my turn today
My dad rubs my shoulder
As he speechlessly drives me to school
We listen to music but
I don’t sing along because
It’s my turn today
First period,
Second,
Third and fourth
In fifth I stand and
Shuffle my notes
I swallow and
Clear my still-sleeping throat and
Prepare to take my turn
Never have I uttered
So many words
In
A
Row
In so little time
My teacher sits in the back
On her couch
Scribbling and
Smiling
But she doesn’t tell me “good job”
When I get home, I have one left
My parents ask me
“How was it?”
So I answer them,
“Fine.”

IN A WORLD NOT SO FAR AWAY
There was a girl.
She’s been there since the beginning.
She’s the one who keeps everyone alive.
She provides the food.
She provides shelter in the cold and dark,
On those rainy nights.
Yet we destroy her.
We take what she gives us for granted and ruin it.
We kill her friends for fun not just for food.
Yet she keeps everyone alive.
I am guilty of this too.
When we cannot see what we are ruining
It’s much easier.
What used to be beautiful is now filled with our waste.
Yet she gives us what we need to live.
She always does.
No matter what we do.
One day she will die.
We will kill her.
Then we will die because she can no longer provide.
Someday the smoke will be all we see.
Someday her green dress will be ruined
Along with her friends we kill for sport.
Someday her blue skin will be filled with black oil.
Getting rid of the patterns that swim on her skin.
One day the bubble she blew over us will pop.
Then the safety we have will be all but gone.
Everything she worked so hard for will be lost.
As she fades away forever more.

GALAPAGOS BEACHES
Our feet were buried deep in the sand.
Something we never thought we’d experience
Yet there we stood, hand in hand.
My sister is my best friend,
My other half,
My partner in crime.
My sister is like my very own walking talking diary,
Every secret kept under metaphorical lock and key
On an island far from home,
Home was never truly far.
As long as my sister was by my side,
Holding my hand, walking me through
I could never be swept away by any tide.
