Shorewood Hills Shark Tooth
September 22nd, 2023
We will develop a welcoming school community of global citizens through: Anti-racist practices, strong relationships, and high academic expectations.
Happy last official day of summer. After a couple of weeks of getting back into the routines of school, our classrooms and halls are buzzing with learning. We also are gearing up for a few events. Please see the Fall Clean-Up Day info below. As well, we are encouraging as many of our Shorewood family members as possible to become approved school volunteers. In order to chaperone field trips, support in the classroom, help out at recess, etc... you must go through the district's training. Even if you think you may not be able to volunteer for these activities, it is still great to have done just in case.
In partnership,
Anne Gillespie
Principal
Becoming a Volunteer
Volunteer onboarding training module
For all Volunteers and non-MMSD Personnel, to be considered “approved”, you must complete the following steps:
Application (Volunteer Tracker) https://appgarden6.app-garden.com/VolTrackWI3269.nsf PLEASE Select the appropriate activities you are participating in or are interested in volunteering. For example, if you are planning to be a field trip chaperone, be sure to select the field trip chaperone activity
Background Check - MMSD will process all background checks for volunteers who have selected a Level 2 activity. Please note, this takes anywhere from 1 day to 7 days for it to process.
Training Requirements
Building & Student Safety Protocols - Required (15 minutes)
Onboarding - Highly Recommended (1 hour)
If a volunteer is supporting the school through special events like booster club or book fairs, etc, and they will not be alone with students, they do not need background checks. (Level 1 positions) However, if a volunteer may have unsupervised contact with students such as a tutor, field trip chaperone or classroom assistant, a background check is required. (Level 2 positions)
Social security numbers (SSN) or Visa Numbers are used for national criminal background checks. If you are unable to provide a SSN, please contact the partnerships department (partnerships@madison.k12.wi.us) for further instructions prior to filling out the volunteer application. A background check will still be completed, but will take longer. Please note that U.S. citizenship is not a requirement for volunteering, and citizenship status is not a part of a background check report.
Volunteers will need a background check every 365 days. Volunteers will receive an email when their application is due for renewal.
Level 1 Volunteers may NOT work alone with students.
Level 2 Volunteers may work with students (Field Trips, Classroom work, Tutoring, etc) If you need to change your status level, please log into your Volunteer Application, edit your profile, update the Activity to a Level 2 role.
The application takes about 15 minutes to complete.
The Background check takes 1-5 days.
Training takes approximately 1-1.5 hours.
If the status says you are "Approved" - you are all set and you may volunteer now!
If the status says you are "Pending" - most likely we are waiting for the background check to come back. It takes 1-7 days.
If the status says you are “PendingRenewal” - you need to renew your background check. Remember, this must be done every 365 days
Safety Patrol Expectations
Safety patrol is an important part of our school and community. 5th graders at Shorewood have the honor to show their leadership by keeping our students safe before and after school.
Their duties are to keep students safe when crossing roads. They will be wearing neon green belts and will have flags for crossing. This will help cars see that kids are crossing. The patrollers will allow cars to pass before crossing students. At times, cars will stop and allow kids to cross. This will only occur if the patrollers have made eye contact and believe it is safe to cross. Patrollers will have their arms out in case they need to hold back or grab a student that may cross in front of a car. They will also report any unsafe behaviors to me and I will relay it to the homeroom teachers and Principal Gillespie!
We expect both students and adults to:
*Respect and listen to your patrollers and wait until they allow you to cross.
*Stop at the crosswalks. Look right, left, right for cars.
*Walk your bikes across the street. Do not ride into the street.
*Thank your patrollers for keeping you safe!
Many thanks,
Mr. Wong
(Safety Patroller Advisor)

From the Health Office
STAYING HOME WHEN SICK
Our school community, like the greater Madison area, is seeing an uptick in viruses, both Covid and plenty of non-Covid colds and viruses.
As a reminder, staff and students are encouraged to stay home and test for Covid-19 if they are experiencing symptoms of illness such as cough, shortness of breath or loss of taste or smell, sore throat, muscle pain or body aches, headache, fever (100.4 degrees F or greater), runny nose, nasal congestion, vomiting or diarrhea.
If symptoms are mild, students may return to school (or stay in school) provided:
- No fever, no vomiting, no diarrhea for at least 24 hours, without taking fever reducing medications.
- They should mask if having respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or congestion and should continue to mask until symptoms are nearly resolved.
- Energy levels are good and they are generally well enough to finish the school day.
- The student agrees to return to the Health Office if symptoms worsen
- * Student's that are positive for Strep throat may return to school after they are fever free x 24 hours and have completed 24 hours of antibiotics.
The Health Office does have a supply of home rapid antigen Covid tests to give out to students and staff in need and our local Public libraries and Public Health clinics also offer free home test kits.
The Public Health of Madison and Dane County website has great information on their services, where you can get vaccines including the updated booster vaccines, tests, and other local data.
Please fill out the MMSD SYMPTOM SCREENER if your student has symptoms of Covid, has tested positive for Covid or is a close contact to someone that has tested positive.
CELEBRATE SMILES
