MyCAP (My Career and Academic Plan)
This year, PCMS rolled out a year-long initiative, MyCAP: My Career and Academic Plan. MyCAP is designed to provide students with ongoing lessons and discussions to think through and plan for their academic, personal/social and career success in high school and beyond. Through the MyCAP process, students were presented with lessons (on at least a monthly basis) to expose them to a range of career awareness and career exploration activities. In addition, lessons focused on a range of skills that support success across a range of academic and career paths: Problem Solving; Critical & Creative Thinking; Collaboration; Communication; & Ethical Reasoning & Mindset. The goal was to help students make connections between their current and future coursework and plan for their postsecondary goals. In addition to class-based lessons, some departments brought in speakers (as in the world language example summarized below) or took a subset of students on a field trip (e.g. Literacy and Math Foundations students took a field trip to Hornstra Farms to learn about the various aspects of running a local business). This initiative will continue into next year.
MyCAP World Language Speakers: Chefs Mike & Alex
On Monday, June 10, 7th and 8th grade Spanish and French students attended a presentation at the PCMS library by Chefs Mike and Alex, from the Loco restaurant chain in Boston, as part of the MyCAP speaker series. The MyCAP speaker series seeks to expose students to how their current course of studies connects to a variety of career opportunities in the future.
Chef Mike is an executive chef overseeing several restaurants including the Loco South Boston location in Boston. Chef Alex manages the Loco Fenway Park location. Both Chefs Mike and Alex are native Spanish speakers. Chef Mike’s family immigrated to the Boston area from Mexico before he was born. Chef Alex immigrated from Colombia when she was in middle school. Both chefs stressed the importance of speaking several languages and highlighted the fact that speaking a second language is one of the skills they look for when hiring new staff for their kitchens.
Communication and comprehension is very important when managing a busy kitchen. Chef Alex has over 700 customers visit the Fenway location before a Red Sox game. When facing such stressful situations it is imperative that language be kept short and clear. Chef Mike taught the key words that are used in the busy kitchen to keep all staff safe and informed of constantly changing situations. Most of those words are in Spanish because most of the kitchen staff is Spanish-speaking. Chef Mike also taught the students the French words that are part of culinary school training.
The highlight of the presentation was tasting of spicy chips and fresh guacamole prepared at the Loco kitchens for the students who attended the presentation. Each student was able to sample the delicious treats!
MyCAP World Language Speaker: Elliot, Commodities Broker
On Thursday, May 23, 7th and 8th grade Spanish and French students were treated to a presentation by Elliot Meehan, as part of the MyCAP speaker series.
Elliot, who is multilingual, spoke to the students about his experiences working as a commodities trader and broker. He highlighted how being a native English speaker who is also fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) & Spanish has opened up opportunities in the field.
Elliot shared his experiences learning Chinese by traveling to Beijing when he was 22. He didn’t speak or understand any of the language but immersed himself in the language and culture. He spent over 10 years living and working in Asia.
After a brief stint back in the United States, Elliot shared how he is heading overseas again, this time to London. In the U.K. he will be using his Spanish and Chinese liaising between his company’s offices in England, Asia and Chile.
Elliot shared his experiences and highlighted how persevering through the “embarrassing and awkward” exchanges was vital to reaching fluency and comfort in language learning.
Mr. Meehan ended the presentation by teaching students a few key phrases and expressions in Chinese.
MY CAP G8 Social Studies: Andraea McEttrick, Assistant Town Clerk
Appropriately scheduled in the middle of town election season, 8th grade social studies students have been studying about the structure of state and local government. As a culminating event, Assistant Town Clerk, Andraea McEttrick, visited Ms. Leeper’s and Mrs. Gearin’s students. Ms. McEttrick provided an interesting and in-depth presentation on the Clerk’s duties, which include overseeing elections, records, and licenses. Ms. McEttrick’s highlighted the many ways the varied roles of the Clerk's office impacts the daily lives of the Pembroke citizens.
Additionally, students participated in a follow-up class discussion relating to the analytical, social, and time management skills needed to perform the Town Clerk’s job. Students made clear connections between the real work of the Town Clerk’s office and the daily skills practiced at school. As a result, students gained a deeper sense of the importance of local government, sparking an interest in local matters that they can focus on when they are of voting age.
TERM 4: Service Learning Projects
TERM 4: Service Learning Projects
For Their service learning project Anna S and Hailey O sold stickers, mini koalas, and bracelets, to raise money to help save koalas from global warming. They sold these things during lunch. They raised $147 to donate to the Australian Koala Foundation. The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is the principal non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to the conservation and effective management of the wild koala and its habitat. The money we have raised will go to koalas that need help and are sick. Nice job Anna and Hailey!
STUDENT COUNCIL FUNDRAISER
The PCMS Student Council held a cancer fundraiser to honor and memorialize our classmate, Sophie Nolan, who lost her battle with cancer last year. They sold construction paper which was then made into a paper chain that hangs outside our cafeteria. There was $540 raised and this will be donated to Boston Children’s Hospital in memory of Sophie Nolan.
