Letter from Mr. Nelson
Smallville-
The weather is finally turning, and we are all firmly ensconced in all things Fall. Our students’ black hoodie outfits finally match the temperature. Good to know they have been merely planning ahead all this time.
With the Fall comes Smalloween, which is by far the most anticipated event this semester. It is set to roll on Friday the 28th, and we will get everybody geared up for it by celebrating with a wacky wardrobe each day of the week (see flyer for details). The week culminates with students and staff wearing their costumes on Friday, as long as they are school appropriate. Also, be sure not to let your student or staff bring look-alike weapons or wear masks. The students in Art and Theater have been working hard on this project, and it is a prime example of how you can put the word “fun” in “fundraiser.”
HB4545 Tutorials: We are all geared up and ready to begin tutorials for all students who did not meet the passing standard in STAAR Math and ELAR last year. As you recall, HB4545 stipulates that any student who does not meet the passing standard in Math or ELAR must receive 30 hours of tutorials per subject this calendar year. We will send out a Google Form next week that lets you pick the best day and time for your student. Sessions are held from 7:45-8:15 a.m. Monday through Friday, and after school from 3:55-4:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We will also have Saturday school options available second semester. If you have any questions, please reach out.
Parent/Guardian Learning Walk: This Wednesday, October 26th, we invite the families of our 6th grade students for our first Learning Walk of the year. We will meet in the cafeteria at 8:30 a.m. and then head off to see all the magic. We’ll investigate core classes and electives and answer any questions you may have. We love these events as they let you guys see what your students are doing and help you better support them at home. Don't worry, 7th and 8th-grade families; we’ll invite you guys for one in November. It will be much like this one; only students and staff won’t be in Halloween garb.
Well, most of them, anyway.
Have a great weekend, and I hope to see you around next week!

Small Annual Ofrenda
Cougars, next week the annual 'ofrenda' for Día de los muertos will be going up in front of the counselors' offices. Please consider contributing to this community altar by adding a picture of a loved one you'd like to remember or by adding any kind of culturally-appropriate decor touches to it (hint: marigolds are the traditional flower!).
(Any pictures should have the name of the student it is associated with taped to the back, por favor).
