Weekly Highlights
Walled Lake Western earns back-to-back Lakes Valley Conference championships
Walled Lake Western entered this season with a target on its back, but that didn’t phase the Warriors as the reigning Lakes Valley Conference champions successfully defended their title.
Western locked up its second-straight LVC title on Friday night in its regular season finale on with a 63-25 win over rival Walled Lake Central.
The Warriors also took home their third-straight city championship with a season sweep over rivals Walled Lake Central and Walled Lake Northern. Western has now won 19-straight Lakes Valley Conference games dating back to October of 2021.
The Warriors open districts on Friday night, 7 p.m., against Redford Thurston (6-3). Western earned home field advantage through regionals based on playoff points with the most in Division 3. On the other side of the district bracket is Auburn Hills Avondale (8-1) and Holly (6-3).
Walled Lake Northern cross country teams claim LVC championships
Walled Lake Northern’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams proved to be the best in the Lakes Valley Conference on Thursday in the conference championship meet at Hess Hathaway Park.
The Knights placed five runners in the Top 11 as the boys’ team earned their first Lake Valley Conference championship in program history. Ty Parker, Evan Rice, Lucas Karbel, Finn Gammerath, Nathan Bruss and Chase Griffith each earned all-conference honors as well.
The Walled Lake Northern girls’ team won its 4th-straight conference title as the seniors swept the LVC meet during their careers. Maddie Gordon, Emily Alt, Ava Kurczewski, Allie Galagher and Izzy Krause earned all-conference honors. Gallagher also set an all-time PR at the meet finishing in 20:46.
The Knights will now get set for the MHSAA Regional Championships on Friday, October 27, at Possum Hollow in Kensington Metro Park.
Clifford H. Smart MS girls take home Lakes Valley Conference cross country crown
The Clifford H. Smart Middle School girls’ cross country team shined on Friday afternoon winning the Lakes Valley Conference championship at Hess Hathaway Park.
Eighth-grader Eliana Fredrick took first place overall running the 3200 meter race in 12:31.435, which was more than three seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Along with taking home the conference title, all seven of the Trojans’ runners placed in the Top 22 earning the entire team All-Conference honors.
Walled Lake Competitive Marching Band continues its season dominance
The Walled Lake Competitive Marching Band shined once again on Saturday night taking first place in Flight 1 at the MCBA Huron Valley Invitational.
The combined band from Walled Lake Central and Walled Lake Western earned a total score of 88.700 and took home all five caption awards; Best Music, Best Visuals, Best General Effect, Best Percussion and Best Auxiliary.
It’s the third first place for WLMB in its three competitions so far this season.
Alto and Soprano Choral Workshop
Hickory Woods Elementary teacher named Red Wings Teacher of the Month
Hickory Wood Elementary 4th grade teacher Karie Starr was honored by the Detroit Red Wings as their Teacher of the Month.
Former Red Wing Darren McCarty presented her with the award at Little Caesars Arena, along with $1,500 to spend for her classroom and four tickets to a Red Wings game.
“I feel extremely honored to be recognized since I work with some of the best teachers there are,” said Starr. “Being awarded with money to spend in my classroom was such a wonderful bonus.”
Starr is now in the running for the Red Wings Teacher of the Year award, which will be presented later in the season.
Saturday fun with Community Education
Community Education director Lizzi McNamara took over our Instagram story for the day to give us an inside look at some of the activities they are currently offering our students, including youth soccer and basketball.

Walnut Creek celebrates a Day of Awesome
The Hawks enjoyed a jam-packed day of fun on Friday after raising a school record $35,004 in their annual PTSA fundraiser. Each grade spent an hour and a half in the gym, which was decked out with inflatable obstacle courses, games and a DJ. Students also celebrated Take Your Parent to Lunch Day as a special treat.

October elementary lunch menu changes
As a result of increasing high demand and not having enough room in our fridge/freezers/kitchens/ovens, the elementary school menu will change to the menu below starting October 16. Light lunch and turkey sandwiches will be offered as a second option.
- Turkey Sandwich is served with a ½ cup of fruit or a ½ cup of vegetable and choice of milk, if they want milk.
- Light Lunch is served with yogurt, one cheese stick, a grain (Gold fish crackers, graham crackers, Chat Graham or Giant Gold Fish) ½ cup of fruit or a ½ cup of vegetable and choice of milk, if they want milk
