Weller February Newsletter

Dear Weller Families,

I have to say, February is one of my favorite months of the school year. We have many traditional Weller activities coming up that our students and families look forward to.

Last week, our Battle of the Book teams in 3rd -5th grade battled each other to determine who would represent our school at the district level on Feb. 6 & 7. Our P.E. teacher, Mrs. Janega, will get the kids excited about the Kids Heart challenge this week, and Mrs. Brice, our librarian, will be holding the annual spelling bee on Thursday, Feb. 8. Please watch for information regarding the upcoming PTA-sponsored Read-A-Thon and scheduling information for parent conferences.


Parent Conferences are Monday and Tuesday, February 19 & 20, and Wednesday, February 21, is a Professional Development day. There will not be school on these three days.


I would like to encourage our families to please make it a priority to attend our Parent Teacher Conferences on February 19th and 20th. Our staff is proud of the progress your child(ren) have made, and we want to share our excitement with you. You can schedule your Parent Teacher Conference times online through PowerPTC starting February 12th. You can access PowerPTC through a link in your Parent PowerSchool account located on the upper right-hand side of the PowerSchool home page. For more information, or if you need help scheduling your conference, please call the Weller office, and they will be happy to help you.


Our School Climate Survey opens on February 12, and we would love to hear feedback from our families. We have set a goal to increase the number of families we hear from this year by 5% compared to last school year. If you could help us meet our goal, we would appreciate it.

February 19th & 20th, 2024 - NO School - Parent Teacher Conferences

  • Monday, February 19th, SCHEDULED APPOINTMENTS – 8am to 5pm
  • Tuesday, February 20th, SCHEDULED APPOINTMENTS - 8am to 5pm

You can schedule your Parent/Teacher Conference times online this year through PowerPTC. The site will open on Monday, February 12th to allow you to start scheduling, and will stay open through Monday, February 19th. You can access PowerPTC through a link in your Parent PowerSchool account located on the upper right-hand side of the PowerSchool home page.

PLEASE SEND STUDENTS TO SCHOOL WITH WINTER GEAR

  • Outdoor recess is only canceled when the temperature reaches -20 °F.

  • Students need to be prepared with appropriate outdoor clothing to ensure they are warm while outside at recess.

  • Dress your students to stay warm and dry outside.

  • Students should be arriving at school wearing their cold-weather gear.

  • Please be sure to put their name on coats, snow pants, hats and gloves.

FAMILY DANCE

Starting Monday, February 5th, the PTA is hosting a READ-A-THON! Our goal with this READ-A-THON is to get kids motivated to read and help the PTA earn funds to support Weller’s art supplies. The top 3 students from each grade will get prizes in conjunction with the Weller book fair.

How it works:

  1. Register your child here: https://app.memberhub.gives/wellerreads24

  2. Email link to family, friends, and neighbors to ask for donations. You can also share the link on social media!

  3. Read! Read! Read!

  4. Log your child’s minutes daily!

  5. The Read-A-Thon will run from Monday, February 5th to Thursday, February 15th . Be sure to log all your child’s minutes by 9pm on February 15th. All minutes read in school will be logged by teachers. All minutes read outside of school are to be logged by parents!


Prefer to donate off-line or just can’t figure out how to get online to log minutes? Not a problem! Reading logs are available from the teachers and need to be turned in by February 15th. If you are logging your child’s minutes online, you do not need to log them on the paper log. The paper log is only for families that are having technological difficulties!!

Checks can be made payable to Weller PTA and please put the student’s name in the memo field of whom you are supporting. Checks and/or cash can be handed in at the front office.

KIDS HEART CHALLENGE

SAVE THE DATE: Join Weller’s Kids Heart Challenge Team TODAY!


Dear Families - Our Kids Heart Challenge program is kicking off on February 7th. We are proud to support the American Association! Students will learn how to keep their hearts happy and healthy through physical and mental wellbeing, while helping others with special hearts by raising lifesaving donations. Our goal is to have 100% of our school families join the team and learn Hands Only CPR through Finn’s Mission. Don’t wait, get started TODAY! Students who join the team early will be recognizes during the school assembly!

  1. REGISTER at www.heart.org/schools or download the Kids Heart Challenge App for Apple or Android

  2. COMPLETE FINN’S MISSION in your HQ to learn Hands-Only CPR, how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T., and how you can help kids with special hearts!

Every class that has at least 80% of their students register online will be entered to win the Classroom Challenge Drawing, the class will get two bonus mystery gifts for every student in the class and the winning teacher will get a $25 Amazon gift card.

  • Yearbooks are $25! You can order them through your powerschool account or at the office until February 21st, 2024.
  • After February 21st, yearbooks are $35 and can only be purchased at the office until March 8th, 2024.

School Times and Office Hours

Office Hours: 9:00 AM-4:00 PM

Student Hours: 9:15 AM -3:45 PM

Supervision on the Playground and Breakfast Service both start at 8:45 AM.

**Students will be on the playground for Precess until 9:15 AM.

  • To notify the office for attendance prior to 9:00 AM, you are welcome to call 457-1629 and select 1 for Attendance and leave a message.For bus questions please call Durham School Services at 907-206-7789.
