Kindergarten Families,
Starting next week, staff will be screening kindergarten students for potential reading difficulties as required by Senate Bill 612. We have been doing this test since 2017, but it will be more visible during CDL. The screening will happen online during the school day. A reading support staff will join the kindergarten teacher on their Zoom session and students may be put in a break-out room to read to the staff member. The test should take no longer than 5 minutes. All Kindergarten students will be getting screened for potential reading difficulties before the end of January.
Please don’t coach your child during this test. The distraction could hamper their score more than help. It will be important we get an accurate picture of their reading abilities. If any concerns surface for your child, you will receive a letter by the end of January, along with a plan for supporting your child.
Thank you!

If you’re done reading your books, please return them so we can replenish our shelves. During school days, place books in the bins outside the front door of the school between 8:00AM and 4:00 PM. You may also return books during undercover checkouts and the book bus. Books will remain on your library account for a week after you return them so they can be quarantined.
If you have questions, please email Mrs. Plew at susan_plew@beaverton.k12.or.us
Beaverton City Library
Beaverton City Library Youth Services staff created a Winter Light festival activity booklet, which is available in English and Spanish to go along with Beaverton Winter Lights. The book has original content created by library staff, such as coloring pages, a short story, a maze, a dot-to-dot, jokes, and more.
A digital copy of the activity book is available on the COB website. We’ll have printed copies available through Activities To Go starting 12/13 (until supplies run out).
Join Megan Barella, Positive Discipline Educator, on December 10 at 6:30 PM to learn how to make your life easier and more enjoyable during the pandemic, let go of parenting guilt and overwhelm, and also feel confident that your children are thriving during this time. Bring your questions and real-life challenges and let’s come together in a virtual parenting community to support your family during this time.
Snowflake Hunt
This month, Beaverton Safe Routes to School invites you to go on a Snowflake Hunt! To participate, make a snowflake and place it in a window facing the street and then go for a walk and count how many snowflakes you find. We hope this provides your family with a fun activity and a little encouragement to get outside for a walk or roll. Use the link below for a snowflake making tutorial and make sure your trip is counted in the following ways:
1. Send an email to bsdsaferoutes@gmail.com with the number of snowflakes you found. BSD students (or parents) please include how many students participated and what school they are from.
2. BSD elementary students can also log their miles on their Marathon Kids account. If you need information on how to set up a Marathon Kids account, contact your teacher.
3. Post a photo to social media with the following hashtags #BSDsaferoutes #BSDtogether #BSDmarathonkids
Nurse News
Immunizations and Flu
A reminder from your School Nurse, please start now to ensure your child is up to date on all immunizations. Typically, any child not up to date would be excluded from school on exclusion day in early February until immunizations are complete. This year exclusion will continue to apply if your student needs to be on school campus for any reason, or we go back to any type of in person learning. Please contact your health care provider and start any "catch-up" now as winter break is a good time to get this completed. If you don't have a primary care doctor, vaccines are also available through Virginia Garcia and Neighborhood Health School Based Health Centers, or you can find another location at https://vaccinefinder.org/
Be a Flu Fighter this year! Cold and flu season has arrived, and this is a great time to get your flu vaccines. There are many flu vaccine options to choose from, but the most important thing is that all people 6 months and older get a flu vaccine every year. Talk with your provider about which flu vaccine is best for you and your children.
Take everyday actions to stop the spread of germs. Wash your hands often with soap and water, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands often with soap and water. If you become sick, limit your contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can also provide you with additional resources about vaccinations and other health topics. To learn more about adolescent vaccines, please visit the CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents
