Winter Break is Around the Corner!
As the semester and year come to a close, all of us at the Center wish everyone a wonderful winter break! No matter who you’re with or what you’re celebrating, we hope the few weeks off of class are a joyful time full of rest and relaxation. We look forward to having you all back with us in the new year!

Student Spotlight: How Did Tia Joy Peterson’s Interest in Changing Outcomes for Incarcerated Parents and their Children Inspire the Direction of her Master’s Program?
#UMNMCH student Tia Joy Peterson (she/her/hers) wrote this reflection on how her field experience and deployment with the Expanding MN Model Practices in County Jail Project contributed to her career in MCH. Tia shared that “Families need wraparound services because if you include the community in which they live, they will have built-in connections once they are released.” Read more about Tia’s deployment here.
Hot Off the Press! Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural Identity Modify Postpartum Participation in the Minnesota WIC Program
MCH alumni Betsy Lundmark (MPH 2021) and Marcia McCoy (MPH 2015; Minnesota Department of Health), along with SPH faculty members Dr. Ellen Demerath and Dr. Jamie Stang, recently published the article, Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural Identity Modify Postpartum Participation in the Minnesota WIC Program, in the Maternal and Child Health Journal. The research analyzed important demographic breakdowns in the utilization of the Minnesota WIC Program that identified future directions for outreach and research.

MCH Leadership Competency #6: Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Skills
Negotiation is a cooperative process where participants try to find a solution that meets the interests of involved parties; it is a discussion intended to produce an agreement. Conflict resolution is the process of resolving or managing a dispute by sharing each party’s points of view and adequately addressing their interests so that they are satisfied with the outcome.

The aims of the Center include providing continuing professional education in maternal and child health (MCH) and support for students in online and in-person MCH graduate programs at the University of Minnesota. Center and MCH Program faculty are involved in research and training in infant and child health, adolescent health, family health, health disparities, reproductive health, and women's health.
