Notification of Administration: Universal Dyslexia Screener
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Indiana Code 20-35.5 requires all Indiana schools to administer a universal screener for learning characteristics related to dyslexia within the first 90 days of school. Approved universal screeners and Level I/Level II diagnostic assessments for learning characteristics related to dyslexia are available on the Indiana Department of Education's (IDOE’s) Dyslexia webpage.
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called a reading disability, dyslexia affects areas of the brain that process language (Mayo Clinic, 2017).
All students in kindergarten, grade one, and grade two will be given the screener within the first 90 days of school. Parents of students who are determined to be “at risk” or “at some risk” for learning characteristics related to dyslexia will be notified of screener results and be provided with the next steps of intervention. Parents will be asked for permission to administer Level I and Level II diagnostic assessments. Parents of students who are not at risk for characteristics related to dyslexia will be notified of screener results and will resume regular educational programming.
Please contact your student’s school with any questions or concerns regarding the universal dyslexia screener requirements. For more information, please reference the Indiana Department of Education’s Dyslexia webpage.
Sincerely,
Sam Marshall, Principal

High Ability Services
If your child was identified last spring as needing high ability services, they will begin to receive services in their qualifying area starting the week of Labor Day. Due space constraints during construction, we will be converting the old main office into the new high ability classroom.
CHS Football Game Expectations
All students attending CHS football games must be seated or with a parent. Also, no balls of any kind will be allowed into the CHS Football Stadium.
Reminder: New Behavioral Expectations for Students
To help our students be more successful, we settled on three new school rules. To help teach the rules, we created a matrix that shows specific examples of what it means to live those rules in different contexts. Our new rules are: be safe, be respectful, and be responsible.
This week our teachers have begun to use the matrix in their lessons to help students display the appropriate behaviors that will propel them to success at Jackson. We consider this document a work in progress; if we find items that need adjustment, we will adjust and re-share with the students and with you.
A copy is below. Because it is designed to be printed on 11x17 paper, the font is very small in this format.
Arrival/Dismissal Reminders
After the first three days of school, we would like to offer a few reminders:
- Cars should never block the way of the school buses
- Cars should pull as far forward on our southern curb during arrival and dismissal as space will allow
- For the safety of the children, please have them enter and exit vehicles on the passenger side during arrival and dismissal
- For both safety and efficiency, adults should remain inside their vehicles during arrival and dismissal
- Cars should make use of the office-provided car tags during dismissal; if a family needs one, please call the office to request one
