This week in school
Y6 tests week It has been a challenging week for Y6 as they have taken part in the KS2 statutory tests for the first time since 2019. The children have been absolutely brilliant throughout, enjoying their special breakfast then settling down to do their best. We are all really proud of their positive attitude and their focus.
TTRS & Numbots By now all the children have had their account details for either Times Table Rock Stars or Numbots, and it's been fantastic to see how engaged they have been when they have been practising and challenging themselves. Please keep on encouraging them to practise at home too: having quick mental recall really supports the children in their maths in school and gives them confidence.
Nursery places We will have some places available in Nursery for children aged 3+ from September. Please get in touch with the school office for further details.
Short survey Thankyou so much for all the positive feedback that has been shared through this form. I have made sure that I have passed on your comments to the teachers named. There is a link here https://www.smore.com/1qtdr and below to a summary of the results.

WINNER-SPOONS!
From our sports correspondent Mr Close
Venue: Staynor Hall Community Primary School
Attendance - 18
The intrepid footballers of year 5 and 6 have certainly started to gain a name for themselves in the local area as a dynamic team, who is well organised , has pace and skill, that puts fear into the defence of their opponents.
Last week saw them visit Staynor Hall for what could have been a tricky fixture having only won 1-nil when the teams previously clashed. On an overcast afternoon and on a pitch with grass that prevented the record gate from actually seeing the dazzling footwork of the children, Brayton were able to show their class and superiority. Early in the first half, Oliver Spooner opened the scoring with a sublime finish following a neat assist by Billy Wright. Brayton would double their lead shortly after when Tom Summerton found a gap between the onrushing defender’s legs to allow Oliver Short to power the ball home. Mid-way through the first half, the frustrations of the home team began to spill over into their mistimed and rash challenges. This resulted in an unfortunate injury to striker Wright, who would no longer be able to continue the game, despite the treatment given by Coach Pooley. Onto the pitch came super sub, Preston Brook. His intentions were clear from the beginning. Attack! Attack! Attack! From a well delivered corner, Brook would pounce at the edge of the box to score with a volley. Brook would also show his defence skills by tracking back on a regular basis to stifle any attack on the Brayton Goal. Two more goals would be added before the break, with Summerton and Arthur Richardson providing excellent finishes to take the team into the half time leading 5-nil. The tactics of the opposing team would again be brought into question during the second half, as their physical approach would prevent Brayton from finding their rhythm, and bringing frustration to the team as their attacking style was interrupted by the referee’s whistle blowing for free-kicks on a regular basis. From one such free-kick, Spooner would complete his hat-trick when encouraged by the Brayton management to go for goal. From a full 20 yards out, his strike would find the back of the net and would seal the victory for the away team. Pooley and Fash-Hill were satisfied with the outcome, but more importantly, that of the team's attitude and perseverance in what was a difficult game.
Man of the Match: Preston Brook
Next fixture: Longmans Hill @ Fortress Brayton

Our school values
Nursery - Stars
Following on from the arrival of our new boat, the children have looked at different types of transport this week. They have enjoyed the stories ‘The Train Ride’ and ‘Duck in a Truck’. They have made different types of transport in the box craft and enjoyed playing with the vehicles in the Small World. They rolled the dice and added the correct number of animal passengers in the maths area and they have drawn their own buses, cars and roads.
In phonics we have focused on initial sounds. We have collected things starting with the same sound in our sound bag. In maths we have been recognising and ordering the numbers to 5.
Star of the week: Logan Firth
FS - Moon and Mercury
Whoever knew a London Bus could be so naughty? This week we have certainly found out.
We have read ‘The Naughty Bus’ by Jan Oke this week and on Monday we all took our own photographs of the bus in a naughty place! We then did some fantastic writing explaining where the bus was and even where it could possibly be going next on its travels. We had lots of fun learning the naughty bus song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwYU3aQ3tHc and even designed personalised number plates for the bus.
In maths we have been looking at pictures of models built from blocks and seeing if we could create a matching model with multilink cubes. We have also been recreating pictures using shapes from a tangram.
We have explored colour and investigated colour mixing this week making our own colour wheels and drawing members of family focusing on scale.
Stars of the Week -
Mercury - Jordan Smallman
Moon - Lucas Armitage
Y1 - Galaxy and Venus
It has been a brilliant week in Year 1, where we have continued our journey around the world visiting the continent of Asia, and exploring the animals that live in hot and cold climates around the world.
Through our English lessons we have studied the text ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ by Michelle Robinson, developing our reading skills in guided reading and our composition through writing instructions using imperative verbs and command sentences.
We continue to work hard with our letters and sounds to develop our decoding, fluency, and in turn comprehension, whilst in maths we have investigated grouping amounts to multiply and sharing to divide.
In R.E. We have written our own version of the creation story, and through our provision we have studied geography, science, art, and our key skills across the curriculum.
Star of the week:
Galaxy - All the class
Venus- William Cooper, for building stamina across the curriculum and demonstrating a can-do attitude when facing challenges.
Year 2 / 3 Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune
This week we have been working really hard to make sure we are ready for our Yr 2 SATS next week. The Year 3 children have become teachers in the making, supporting their Year 2 partners through reading comprehension questions and applying maths in different contexts. This has proved a fantastic opportunity for both year groups to consolidate their learning and plug any gaps caused by Covid.
It hasn’t all been about next week though. In RE, we have been learning about the festival of Ramadan and our Friday PE sessions have proved a huge hit with the classes as they try to improve their fitness with our circuit training sessions.
In Science the children have continued learning about forces - this week it was time for the magnets! We have also started ‘An introduction to animation’ in our computing sessions. The children really enjoyed learning about how to create their own cartoons and there was a lot of laughter involved!
Make sure you all get some fresh air and lots of sleep this weekend as we have a busy week ahead!
Stars of the week -
Jupiter - Sadie Smethurst
Saturn - Emily Richardson
Neptune - Ethan Prosser
Year 4 Mars and Earth
We’re still thinking about that far off holiday destination of Greece. In English, we are learning all about the persuasive language used by hotels to convince people to stay at their wonderful resorts. The children have enjoyed appling the language that they read in last week's researching opportunity. In maths, we were given the chance to see how money is applied to real life situations. We looked at food and toy catalogues to try and solve some worded money problems that people face in everyday life. We can all say now that we know just how much a lovely Sunday roast dinner costs. After finishing learning about money we have started our new unit, time. The children have been thinking back to those lockdown lessons and practising telling the time skills . Ask your child to show you their new skills!
Stars of the week:
Earth - Kaydon Chamberlain
Mars - Kai Dougan
Year 5 Asteroid and Pluto
What an exciting week we’ve had in Year 5, we journeyed to Mexico to explore its varied geography, its climate and biomes. Inspired by the country's natural beauty we made oil pastel landscapes of the rainforest, mountain ranges and deserts that are found there. After designing our tacos last week, we got out our chopping boards, knives and graters to make our own! We had a great time learning to use knives safely and constructing our (sometimes huge) tacos. YUM!
Our Mexican theme continued in maths, we delved into the menu of a very special restaurant ‘The Brayton Burrito’ to add and subtract decimals in the context of money. We have some very savvy shoppers, some of whom had to contend with percentage delivery charges too. This smart shopping has come in handy, as in PHSCE we have been looking at incomes for various jobs and how much is spent on housing, utilities and food. This has led to lots of interesting discussions about what we really need in life and what non-essentials are actually value for money. Great work this week Year 5!
Asteroid- Chloey Hodgson
Pluto- Jack Stewart
Year 6 Nebular and Constellation
Well, SATs = done! The entire school staff would like to congratulate the year 6 students for getting through their assessment week in such a way that it well and truly shows that they are ready for the transition to high school. You came into school with smiles on your face each and every day. We know that each and every one of you gave everything that you could to show the incredible amount of learning you have done this year after all the disruptions you have faced. You have made us incredibly proud with your perseverance, tenacity and dedication!
