A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
I have included a few updates in this newsletter for families.
Picture Day is scheduled for October 2nd. Please click on the link to complete the online orders through Lifetouch.
First period classes start promptly at 7:35 am. We still have students arriving after 7:35, which means they are beginning their day without the morning announcements and important information that is shared at the start of the school day. Attendance and tardy-to-school letters will be sent out next week from the Sandburg office. If your child is frequently absent or tardy to school, we are happy to partner with you to address the situation.
- The first quarter ends on October 13th. Sandburg teachers will send emails if your child currently has a D or U in their class. You should start receiving these emails next week. Please take time to review your child's grades in Infinite Campus over the weekend.
Here is a link to the Sandburg Bell Schedule as a reference. Students will use this bell schedule and their own schedule to move through their classes each day. Teachers will be taking attendance for classes at the beginning of the school day, and for each class period.
Our school staff contact list is updated and available on the D15 website. Feel free to print it and keep it handy in the case you need to get in touch with any of our staff throughout the year.

BPAC Event: Breaking Barriers
Our BPAC team aspires to ensure our students and their families know the power of college and post high school education and that there is a pathway to these opportunities that is attainable for all!
We have programming planned for students and their caregivers that includes college counselors, a keynote presentation from Dr. Jose Enriquez (Founder of Latinos in Action), and breakout sessions with Latino leaders from a variety of professions.
Please help us to spread the word about this motivational and inspiring event!

Young Entrepreneurs Academy
As you may have already heard, The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is a groundbreaking afterschool program that teaches students all of the skills necessary to launch and run their own real businesses through a proven, projects-based curriculum. Developed in 2004 at the University of Rochester with support from the Kauffman Foundation, and run locally by the Palatine Area and Rolling Meadows Chambers of Commerce, today the YEA! program continues to empower ambitious students across the country to become REAL entrepreneurial success stories!
The YEA! program celebrates the spirit of enterprise in America and literally transforms students into real business owners. School districts benefit greatly in school spirit and publicity from students in the YEA! program. Please enjoy this video to learn more!

Vision Screenings
VISION SCREENINGS are mandated by the Illinois Public Health Department for all 8th grade students. In addition to the mandated grade level, screenings for both hearing and vision are conducted for special education students, teacher referrals and students new to the district. These screenings will take place at Carl Sandburg Junior High on Monday, October 2 by nurses that are certified in vision and hearing screenings.
If your child is already under the care of a licensed healthcare provider and wears (or should be wearing) glasses, please let the school nurse know. Please ensure your child has their glasses at school on Monday October 2. If your child has had a recent eye examination that is not on file in the health office, please return the completed examination form to the health office in lieu of screening.
Parents/guardians will be notified if there are any abnormal findings. These are only screenings and should never replace a thorough exam by your doctor. The health and well-being of your child is of utmost concern to us. The time you take in this matter is very much appreciated. Please contact the health office or Corinne Jones, CCSD Health Coordinator, with any questions.

Boys Basketball Season Registration
If your child is interested in trying out for boys basketball, please review this information and complete Steps 1 & 2 below
STEP 1: Complete the BBB registration form linked at the top of the information page
STEP 2: Make sure your child has an updated physical on file in the SCHOOL OFFICE.
Physicals are considered current for 13 months prior to the start of the season. The physical will need to be dated 11/15/22 or later to be eligible for the boys basketball season.

8th grade- October 23-24
Sandburg Clubs and Intramurals- Get Involved!
Arts and Crafts Club- This club will meet periodically from October through May after school. Ms. VanDyke is the club sponsor. Watch the morning announcements for the first club meeting.
Art Club- Art club is for everyone as long as they have a passion for art! The purpose of the art club is to provide students who have an interest in art, an opportunity to explore art beyond what is offered in the curriculum. This club will take place after school every other Thursday. Ms. Martin, our art teacher, will be the sponsor. Watch the morning announcements for the first club meeting.
Book Club- 7th grade book club will meet with Mrs. Buelow and 8th grade book club will meet with Mrs. Foley. Both clubs will meet at lunch. Watch the morning announcements for the first club meeting date.
Chorus- This group will meet on Wednesday mornings at 6:45 a.m and Wednesday after school. Kids should plan to attend one or the other or both. The first meeting will be on September 13th. The sponsor for this club is Mrs. Kurka.
Dungeons and Dragons Club- This club will meet weekly on Wednesdays after school and run from September to May. Mr. Stevenson, our STEM teacher, is the club sponsor.
Environmental Club- This club will meet at lunchtime with the sponsors, Mrs. Ruiz and Mrs. Baumler. Watch the morning announcements for the first club meeting date.
Math Support- This group will meet on most Wednesdays after school. Watch the morning announcements to make sure it is meeting. Mrs. Soenksen is the sponsor.
Yearbook Club- This club will meet after school with Ms. Lestina, our club sponsor. Watch the morning announcements for the first club meeting date.
Spirit Squad- This club will meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays with Ms. Rzepka and Ms. Lestina, our club sponsors. Watch the morning announcements for the first club meeting date.

A note from the Sandburg PTSA
CSJH Parents -
Thank you so much to everyone that has contributed to the PTSA this year, either through PTSA Sponsorships or the SnapRiase fundraiser. We have now received donations from approximately 8% of CSJH families.
So far we have raised about 1/3 of our fundraising goal. Without additional support, we will be forced to cancel educational events like the WoW Day Keynote Speaker, and raise admission prices on fun activities like Winter Warm-Up.
If you are financially able, please consider contributing so that we can make these events available and accessible to all students.
Additional fundraiser information is available here (Spanish). Not an email person? That's ok! Once you create an account, you can share our fundraiser via social media or text without entering any email addresses. All students that receive at least one donation will earn free food at the Fall Fest on Friday, October 13th and be entered into a raffle for free spiritwear!
