Jarrell Elementary Newsletter - January 22, 2024
Greetings JES Community!
We managed the first cold snap of the year with only a delayed start. Special thanks goes to all of our teachers who brave the freezing temperatures in our car rider line, bus duty and out front. They are there every morning to ensure our students get into the building safely and with a smile!
We have received a donation of new coats for kids. If your child needs a coat this winter, please reach out to our counselors, and we will get you taken care of.
iReady diagnostic results are coming home! This is an important report about your child's progress this year. Please see the information below, but if you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher.

JES Student Council at the School Board Meeting!
Our JES Student Council represented our campus at the January School Board Meeting. They presented appreciation gifts to our board members for their hard work and dedication to our students and their families, our staff and our community. We could not be more proud of these student leaders.
Holiday Read-A-Thon Winners!

Prizes were awarded to the 57 students who participated in this year's Holiday Read-A-Thon. Arianna Torres and Isaak Nelson were our bike winners! We will have another Read-A-Thon over spring break, so stay tuned for another chance to win!
JES passes TEA Intruder Audit!
Through our continuous efforts to focus on student safety, all exterior doors are locked at all times. The only entrance to our building is through the front office. TEA sends an auditor out to check campus doors, and JES passed our audit this past week!

As always, if your child is running a fever or having diarrhea or vomiting, he/ she must stay home for 24 hours.
Important Daily Deadlines!
7:30 a.m. The back doors automatically lock, and you will need to drive around and walk your child in to the building. PLEASE DO NOT DROP-OFF STUDENTS AFTER 7:30. They must be signed in by a parent or guardian.
1:30 p.m. ALL transportation changes must be made by 1:30 by emailing or calling Stephanie Garcia at (512)-746-2170 or stephanie.garcia@jarrellisd.org.
2:30 p.m. Any student checking out early for an appointment, must be picked up prior to 2:30.
iREADY RESULTS ARE COMING HOME!
Your child will bring home a full color iReady report showing your child's progress so far this year. Please take minute to review this report. Some information has been linked below about what these reports will tell you. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to your child's teacher.
PRE-K
This week in pre-k, we will be learning that imagination is forming pictures in your mind of something that cannot be seen or is not real. Imagination can inspire creativity, such as acting out a story, creating art, or building a structure. In math, we will be subitizing sets up to 5 (telling the amount without counting). In literacy we will continue learning letter sounds and experimenting with punctuation in writing. Lastly, we will introduce cause- and- effect relationships, one event causes another to happen.
KINDER
1st GRADE
Reading: We will be preparing for our Unit 6 assessment where we have been evaluating details to determine what is important in our informational text. We will also be assessed on key vocabulary related to the unit.
Phonics: We will understand that adjectives are words used to describe nouns. We will practice describing objects using our five senses. Students will understand that a description tells in detail how something or someone appears to the senses. By using adjectives when we talk and/or write, we can provide a vivid, interesting description for other people. We will continue to distinguish between past-, present-, and future-tense verbs. We will continue to read from our reader and answer written questions about key details. Our spelling words are: sounded, lifted, pointed, parked, waved, grinned, tripped, and have. Students will be tested over these words on Friday.
Math: We will continue our unit over place value by breaking down numbers into parts. For example, the number 36 has two digits, 3 and 6. The 3 is in the tens place, so its value is 30. The 6 is in the ones place, so its value is 6. Decomposing 36 into place value parts means separating it into 30+6. We will also use place value to compare quantities using the symbols for greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=). We will be adding and subtracting tens from a multiple of 10, as in 3 tens+1 ten=4 tens/30+10=40 or 1 ten-0 tens=1 ten/10-0=10. We will also be adding tens to a two digit number, as in 29+10=39.
Science: We will continue to record weather information by temperature such as hot or cold, clear or cloudy, calm or windy, and rainy or icy. We will understand that air is all around us and observe that wind is moving air.
2nd GRADE
In Reading (Knowledge), we will be wrapping up our domain on insects. In Math, we will learn about strategies for decomposing tens and hundreds. In Reading (Skills), we will be learning about tricky 'e' and persuasive writing. In Science, we will be learning about weather. In Social Studies, we will be learning about government officials.
3rd GRADE
We are so excited for this upcoming week! In reading, we will be wrapping up our fifth unit about vikings. Students will be constructing a paragraph about their favorite Norse god and how they contributed to the stories that we read. In math, we will continue to learn about fractions. Specifically, we will be learning about how fractions are made of equal parts, as well as identifying numerators from a pictorial model. In social studies we will be learning about budgets. Students will start a budgeting project where they are trying to not surpass their budget limit.
4th GRADE
Fourth graders will be working hard in math to decompose fractions as a sum of unit fractions using strip diagrams. In language arts, we will continue our poetry unit. We will be making inferences and exploring figurative language. We will also be composing our own poems throughout the week. In social studies, we continue our study of the Texas Revolution. In science we continue working in our weathering and erosion unit. We will be exploring different types of weathering. It will be a fun filled week full of learning.
5th GRADE
This is a big week in ELAR! Students will define characteristics of the villanelle poetry form while using textual evidence to make inferences about the poem's meaning. They will then work on comparing their own original villanelles incorporating their personally created motto/ slogan. Later on in the week, they will compare and contrast characters' reactions in a poem.
This week your students will dive into the captivating world of fractions! They'll explore fraction decomposition using strip diagrams and master the art of multiplying fractions with the associative property, employing engaging models along the way.
In science, your students will be exploring the physical features of the sun, earth, and moon with a focus on comparing and contrasting our celestial neighbors!

ART
All Students are completing snowflake artwork that incorporates the element of shape and principle of pattern.
1st Grade - Continue work on an artwork as a response to the book "Tar Beach" by Faith Ringgold
5th Grade - Begin plans for clay work
3rd-5th will continue their study of the Texas Bluebonnet Books for 2023-2024.
