What is Empathy?

Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.

Why Focus on Empathy?

• Empathy builds positive classroom culture. Empathy empowers students to learn to understand each other to build trust and safety in the classroom.
• Empathy strengthens community. Empathy helps students strengthen their relationships with classmates, other students and adults at school, and at home.
• Empathy prepares your students to be leaders in their community. The best leaders understand the people they lead and are able to show they care.

Offerings at Mile High Middle School

Mile High believes it is important to offer extra curricular activities throughout the school year. Due to a variety of factors, not all clubs take place throughout the whole school year and what we offer will change as the year progresses. We will continue to add and update new clubs throughout the school year and provide the details about those clubs below.

H.B. 2707 - Observe Moment of Silence

Enacted on September 24, 2022, H.B. 2707 requires all public and charter schools to provide students the opportunity to participate in a moment of silence at the beginning of each school day. This one, but not more than two minutes can be used for contemplation or reflection in a manner determined by the student and their parents.

Please discuss with your child on how you would like them to observe this moment of silence. Teachers will prompt students to stay quiet for the time and think and reflect on "good things" or on what parents have discussed with them. Click here for Q&A on the law.

Prescott Unified School District encourages students to take pride in their attire as it relates to the school setting. A spirit of support and cooperation between parents and school personnel is needed to ensure that students come to school appropriately dressed in attire that does not pose health or safety hazards and is appropriate to the school environment. Students should dress in a manner that takes into consideration the educational environment, safety, health, and welfare of themselves and others.

Allowable Dress & Grooming

• Leggings or yoga pants as long as they are not see-through or reveal undergarments.

• Ripped or torn jeans but that do not have holes that reveal undergarments, or buttocks.

• Baggy pants that cover undergarments and do not fall off when students walk/run.

• Shirt straps that are wider than credit cards.

• Shirts must have an appropriate length (must cover all skin between shirt and pants/skirts/shorts).

• Must cover the torso (both front and back) and have an appropriate neckline and fitted armholes.

• Undergarments should not be visible at any time.

• Hats and sunglasses may be worn while outside. When entering a building hats will be removed, with the exception of religious headgear.

• Shoes or sandals with a hard sole must be worn at all times.

Non- Allowable Dress & Grooming

• Clothing with obscene words, slogans, double meanings, sexual content, acts of violence, considered hate speech, or anything that can be interpreted as immodest or indecent.

• Any clothing promoting, advertising, or depicting alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

• Tube top or bandeau shirts

• Pajamas, Blankets, Slippers, Flannel Pants/Onesies, ect.

• Hoods, stocking caps, headgear (crowns, ears, etc), costumes and bandanas are not to be worn during the regular school day.

• Articles of clothing or jewelry which may cause damage, maintenance problems, or present any safety concerns or school disruptions (ie chains, spikes, etc).

• Students are not allowed to draw or write on themselves or others.

• Make-up should be used with restraint. Hair needs to be styled so that the student’s eyes are visible.

• Applying perfume, cologne, hairspray, body spray, make up and other personal hygiene items are not allowed in class, restrooms or hallways. P.E. Teachers will monitor proper use in the locker rooms.

• Nails that are filed in pointed shapes (coffin nails, stiletto nails). Nail length needs to be appropriate to the school environment and setting.

The school administration reserves the right to employ administrative judgment in disallowing any clothing, accessories, jewelry, and/or other items which could include any trends or fads that are distracting to the educational process, atmosphere, climate, or that pose a safety issue.

IF STUDENTS ARE OUT OF DRESS CODE THEY WILL BE ASKED TO CHANGE CLOTHES USING CLEAN/NEW CLOTHING IN THE NURSE'S OFFICE, OR PARENTS WILL BE CONTACTED TO BRING ALTERNATIVE CLOTHING ITEMS TO SCHOOL. STUDENTS WITH INAPPROPRIATE WORDS OR IMAGES MAY BE ASKED TO COVER THEM WITH TAPE OR CHANGE CLOTHING.

PUSD Cell Phone Policy

Why do we have rules around cell phones?

Cell phones are valuable and important communication devices in today’s world. Prescott Unified School District schools are committed to an academic environment where students are engaged in their learning, actively participating, and building academic endurance. However, use of cell phones during the instructional day severely impedes and distracts from the learning process.

Cell Phones / Electronic Devices

For safety and communication purposes, cell phones MAY be brought on campus and to school activities and events. All electronic devices, including cell phones, ipods, earbuds/headphones, ect. must be put away upon entering campus and remain out of sight throughout the school day, activities, and events. Electronic devices are NOT permitted during passing periods or at lunch. Electronic devices will be left in the classroom when students are using a pass to leave class.

If electronic devices are found in violation of this policy, the item will be confiscated by a staff member and students will have to have parent signatures and follow the policy on the confiscated item document to have the item returned.

• 1st offense - Student may pick up confiscated item in the office at the end of the day. Student was informed of and understood the 2nd offense.

• 2nd offense - Student may pick up confiscated item in the office the next day if this form is signed by a parent/guardian and turned in.

• 3rd offense - Student's parent/guardian must claim confiscated item in office. (Parent/Guardian may claim the item in the office between 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.)

• 4th offense - Disciplinary action will be taken for Defiance of Authority; Cell Phone Contract will be enacted.

Cell phones are only allowed for use after the final dismissal bell has rung and the student is not participating in afterschool programs.

If students need to be contacted during school hours, please go through the school office. A phone is also available in the front office for students to use to communicate with parents. The school is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen cell phones and electronic devices.
