PJP News - January and February
Principal's Updates
It is wonderful that we have made it to midterm. I do hope that everyone will have a few days R and R!
It has been a busy start to the year and as the days have gotten brighter our school has gotten busier. We have enjoyed football with KlassKicks, Grandparents Day and well being week since we returned after the Christmas holidays. We are looking forward to Seachtain Na Gaeilge, World Book Day and our fifth classes representing our school at the Science Blast in the RDS.
Well done to the Peace Proms Choir who represented our school so well at the RDS, Thanks to Ms. Magner, Ms. Byrne and Ms. McKenna for their hard work!
A very big well done to our six sixth classes who flew the PJP Flag so well at the recent BT Young Scientist Exhibition. It was the first time that we had applied to take part in this great day! We are so proud that all of our sixth classes were all chosen to exhibit their projects. And of course well done to our students who made it onto RTE News Today. Thanks to all the teachers and especially Ms. Hayden for ensuring the success of this project!
BT Young Scientist
Our sixth class students had the most incredible day exhibiting their STEM projects at the BT Young Scientist Primary Fair at the RDS on Friday 12th of January.
We were absolutely thrilled and excited when all six of our sixth classes were successful in their project applications.
The BT Young Scientist Exhibition is one of the world's leading and longest-running school science exhibitions, celebrating 60 years this year! This wonderful event aims to encourage primary school students to develop their interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in a non-competitive environment.
The six projects we presented at the event were:
- The science of drones - Ms. McDaid's Class
- Can wearable technology such as a Smart Watch or Fitbit improve children's health and well-being? - Ms. James's Class
- The Five Second Rule - Fact or Fiction? - Ms. Byrne's Class
- Estuary Science - Where Fresh Water Meets Salt Water - Ms. Bradshaw's Class
- How Do We See Colour? - Ms. Millar's Class
- Battle of the Senses: Is our Sense of Taste Affected by Smell? - Ms. Cahill's Class
As well as having the opportunity to present their projects to the public and visiting judges, all the students had the opportunity to explore and enjoy lots of other amazing STEM activities including other primary and secondary school project stands, live shows and practical STEM demonstrations.
It was a truly incredible learning experience and enjoyable day for all involved and we hope to have the opportunity to take part again next year.
A huge thank-you to all the sixth class teachers as well as Ms. Hayden, Ms. Creavin, Mr. Whiting, Ms. Whyte, Ms. Markey, Jane and the parents who accompanied the children on the day.
BT Young Scientist Fair by Alia Solomons
On Friday 12th of January, our year took part in the BT Young Scientist Primary Fair. The whole thing was amazing, with every corner you turned there was something new and exciting to look at or interact with as well.
We got to the school nice and early for the big start and when the bus arrived, we headed off to the RDS to start our journey. When we got there, we got showed to our stand where we set up our project ready for presentation. We took it in turns to present and show our project to all the different people that walked by. Our project was about does your sense of smell affect your sense of taste and we discovered lots of things while studying this topic.
After our shift, we got to go and explore other projects as well as the other things that were there to entertain and learn. One of the most popular things all the students loved was the exhibition hall with lots of interactive things like VR, laser rooms and making things like slime and taking fun quizzes to earn prizes. There was also a 3D cinema which was on every so often. Lots of people also liked that there was a lot of free things to take at each stand.
The school projects were separated into secondary school and primary school. For the secondary schools it was competitive, and a winner was announced at the end. For the primary schools it was not competitive, but judges came around to each class to look at what they had put together and to give them feedback. For our project, the judge who came up gave us really good feedback back for excellent presentation and outstanding talking skills. I think the next 6th class should definitely take part in this wonderful experience and learn as much as we did there.
BT Young Scientst Fair by Anna Le Blanc
On Friday the 12th of January, me and my class took the bus to the RDS for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition. This year, the whole of 6th class took part in the event with a different project from each class.
When we got off the bus, we followed the rest of the school inside the building. Inside was packed with schools from all over the country. We followed our teacher to our stand, which was close to the other stands from our school and began to set up our project. Our project title was Battle of the Senses - Does Smell Affect Our Sense of Taste? Our project was based of the latest Air Up bottle craze to see does smell really affect your taste.
Our class was split into groups who took turns every hour to run our stand which gave us plenty of time to look around the other stands. Honestly the layout was great! There was a primary school section, a secondary school section and a big room where all the companies and charities stands were. I spent most of my time interacting with all the companies and businesses learning what they do and collecting stickers and pens!
Time flew by and before I knew it, it was my turn to stand at our stand and explain our project to passers-by. I was excited to share our findings and show just how much work we put into it our project. We had predictions, findings and surveys. We also did taste tests with our class. We blindfolded some classmates, put nose pegs on them and added another scent while they were eating jelly tots and had our results stuck up on our stand. We also had a Minecraft 3D diagram.
The judges thought we were great and left an amazing review of our project. After we only had a half hour left so I looked at a few more stands and then finally it was time to go. I had an amazing day and hope to be back in a few years time! :)
Wellbeing Week
As it was Wellbeing week in school this week, Ms. Burke's class were very busy doing some fantastic wellbeing work as you can see below!
Rainbow moments for Wellbeing Week!
We have loved celebrating wellbeing week in room 23. Something we have started to do to focus on our well-being is writing our rainbow moments on this rainbow outside our classroom. We love looking at it on our way in to class every morning!
Peace Proms Choir
The children had an amazing time at Peace Proms recently. They sang in front of 4000 people! This experience was made extra special when Alisha Weir (Matilda from the Netflix film) showed up and sang with them . Thanks to Ms Magner, Ms McKenna and Ms Byrne for working with the choir. Well done boys and girls!
Student Council
The Student Council met recently and went through the suggestion box from the students. There were lots of suggestions to plant more flowers and vegetables so we have purchased seeds but are waiting for the frost to be completely gone before we get planting in our new flower beds.
Grandparent's Day
We had the school’s first grandparents’ day, on 26th of January to celebrate Catholic schools’ week.
It was in the hall, where we had put chairs and tables for the grandparents to relax and chat.
The sixth-class students baked yummy goods like cakes, biscuits, and other pastries for the grandparents to enjoy!
There were also beverages such as teas, coffees, and water which some of the staff gave out.
Ms. Bradshaw’s sixth class students helped in the hall by giving out tea and coffee and directing the grandparents to their grandchildren’s classroom for a class visit.
The grandparents had a great time visiting their grandchildren’s classrooms and seeing where they sat, their work on the walls or having a singsong with their grandchildren.
There was classical music playing in the hall along with a lovely poem read by some 6th class students.
In the end, it was such a lovely way to spend Catholic schools’ week and for the grandparents to spend time with their grandchildren and other grandparents.
All the grandparents thought it was a great hit and such a good idea and would love to do it again!
This action packed day was full of fun for children, parents and grandparents as several generations came together here in our school. A massive thank you to Ms. Bradshaw for organising this day. I'm sure we'll see it again in the future!

St. Brigid's Day in Third Class
Ms. Huldberg's class were very busy creating a beautiful tribute to St. Brigid using fabric to make a collage of St. Brigid's Cape stretching over the land!
Nature Studies with Mouse
All the third classes have been very lucky to have Mouse from the OWLS School Programme visiting once a month. This month included a nature walk and some birdwatching. The children saw wood pigeons, wagtails, seagulls, crows, robins, swans, geese and cormorants. A seal also visited while they were looking out over the estuary!
