#PHMExcellence
Everyone is a Kingsmen so we're applauding some of the recent accomplishments of Penn High School students & staff. Penn Girls Basketball Coach Kristi Ulrich was named head coach of the Indiana All-Star Team; and Swim/Dive Coach Jess Preston was named NIC Girls Swimming Coach of the Year.
#PHMExcellence Breaking Records
On Friday, Feb. 10, Penn Boys Basketball won the NIC title South Bend Washington. Markus Burton scored a career-high of 47 points in that game. On Valentine's Day Penn's Markus Burton became St. Joseph County's all-time high school boys basketball leading scorer AND surpassed his own personal record scoring of 2,000 points--no other high school boys basketball player in St. Joe County has ever hit the 2,000-mark. Congratulations! It is achievements like this that are the reason why Markus is one of the top candidates for Indiana Mr. Basketball!
The Kingsmen are at Elkhart tonight. Click here for tickets for Feb. 17th game. They play at home next Tuesday, Feb. 21 against Mishawaka. There will be a special recognition before the game for Markus' achievements. Click here for tickets to the Feb. 21st game. Go Kingsmen!
Today, thanks to a very special donor, we once again are able to send home a book to every student at Elsie Rogers as part of our One Book, One School project. Along with the book (Toys Amazing Stories Behind Some Great Inventions), your child should be bringing home an orange reading calendar. This calendar can be used as a guide so that you as a family know what chapter we are reading each day. Depending on the grade and age of your child, teachers will opt to utilize this book in class as they see fit. We encourage family reading at home regardless as reading together has many benefits. Reading to or with a child:
- stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world.
- helps them develop listening skills.
- develops language skills, comprehension skills and profoundly expands their vocabularies—much more than any other media.
- creates warm emotional bonds between adults and kids.
- cultivates a lifelong love of reading.
Really the benefits are endless!
To assist with the at home reading time, as a staff we created a celebrity reader site. Using the link below, you will find each chapter of the book being read aloud by a staff member! A big thank you to Mrs. Mauro for putting this activity together!

One Book, One School Community Service Project
The mission of the Boys and Girls Club is to serve the youth of our community by providing social, physical, academic, cultural and family experiences in a safe environment and to help develop a value system that will improve the quality of their lives and lead them to become productive, responsible citizens.
We hope to support them in this mission by donating toys that will assist their students in this mission.
To ensure that we are supporting their needs, I asked the assistant director of development, Mr. Zach McFarland to share a list of items that they are in need of. He did so in an Amazon Wish List. I asked that the purchased items be sent to Elsie Rogers directly so that the Elsie Rogers students can see how they are helping! This shipping setting within Amazon has already been set to this for easability. It should show up under Zach's name, but it is Elsie Roger's School address!
Please consider using the link (See Below) to purchase a toy for students who partake in this local program. Encourage your child to be part of the process. I found this quote which resonated with me regarding service - "Serving others is love in action."
Thank you,
Mrs. Campbell
