TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 4
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
I am grateful that the impact of the hurricane was minimal here in the Orlando metro area. I am sure that some of you have family and friends in the “Big Bend “of Florida, who were not as fortunate. Hurricanes are predictable however the challenge remains the same, “How can we minimize the impacts?”
As a STEM school I think we are obliged to have these discussions with our students as young as possible. Children are creative, caring, and in most cases, fascinated by hurricanes. We need our students to understand the basic fundamentals of science, so they can one day engineer stronger buildings, create more durable roadways, and design ways to mitigate these powerful storms.
“Every brilliant experiment, like every great work of art, starts with an act of imagination.” -Johan Lehrer

Sixth Grade Chromebook Distribution and Fee
Sixth grade students will be assigned an individual Chromebook this school year. OSES has started handing out Chromebooks to students that have paid the $60 Student Fee via School Pay. If you have not paid, please use the link below. Students will not have the option to use a personal device as it does not include our campus Secure Browser and safety software. Contact Mrs. Carter (Cayce.carter@orlandoscience.org) with any questions.
Curriculum and Testing Updates
Students in Grades 3-6 took the first FAST Progress Monitoring assessment. Makeups for Grades 3-6 will take place after Labor Day. Grades K-2 started testing on August 18th – classroom teachers will reach out with the exact dates and times. Your student’s results from PM1 are for informational purposes only, and you will be provided with information about how to access the results after the testing window is completed. Contact Mrs. Carter (Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org) with any questions.
THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
WHITAKER
This week in Kindergarten, students are enjoying their Social Studies Inquiry Project about life long ago and today.
Students are learning about comparing and contrasting while exploring how people lived long ago. Students are also learning about the five senses with hands-on activities using their sense of smell and touch.
FIRST
QUARTERMAN
SECOND
LAYHER
Another great week for learning in second grade. We wrapped up our Character Education theme of honesty, by sharing stories of us being honest and how we feel when we are not. We are working on different math strategies for solving addition equations quickly. In ELA we are reading stories that help us understand how being a good citizen can make a difference to others. Which connects to our Social Studies lessons about community. Due to the hurricane day, S.T.A.R math testing has been rescheduled for Wednesday 9/6.
THIRD
Myers
These past couple weeks, Mrs. Myers students have been working hard on context clue, authors purpose, and ensuring that we answer questions using the RACE strategy. In math they finished their Place Value unit by turning into realtors and finding the “Value” of different properties. In science, they have completed labs, trying to identify the different variables (test, control, and constants), as well as understanding the steps scientists take in completing an investigation.
FOURTH
BAKER
This week, our fantastic fourth graders completed F.A.S.T. PM 1 for ELA. Due to the hurricane, school was canceled on Wednesday. A new date will be set for the Math assessment. Students started working on their Sunshine State project this week. They will display their cereal box projects during the last week of September.
Vocabulary is a focus in all subject areas. Students have been actively expanding their vocabulary by journaling, crafting small posters, participating in collaborative exercises within their small groups and homework practice. We are proud of their enthusiasm for learning and their commitment to improving their language skills.
FIFTH
MACALLISTER
The past week in ELA, our classroom worked on an in-depth analysis of Jacqueline Woodson’s memoir in verse, “Brown Girl Dreaming.” We examined the elements that are crucial to a memoir in verse. The students also investigated the author’s purpose behind her writing. Then, the students created their own memoir in verse, utilizing the same poetic elements. This week, we are beginning to delve into an informational text about selfies and how the “Selfie” has evolved from a painted self-portrait to the filtered cell phone camera picture. In Geography, we examined origin stories, specifically the “Hopi Origin Story.” We will continue delve into other origin stories from Native American Tribes.
SIXTH
CARDOSO
This week in 6th-grade math, we started our 6th standards with Unit 4. Students were learning what rational numbers are and learning how to order them and plot them. We worked together in groups to help understand how to plot rational numbers in a number line. This week will also be the first quiz we will take in class. A reminder notes that we took in class are posted on Google Classroom.
SPECIALS
MONTES
The PE team is all brand new this year! Coach Montes, Coach McAdams, and Coach D are all impressed with the campus wide Orca culture and welcome from the students, parents, and staff!
PE classes start every class with warmups that activate the cardiovascular system and utilize the upper and lower body. All three classes are building rules and routines to ensure a safe, healthy, and inspired class year. In the three weeks, we started some team-building games that emphasize communication, improving morale, and confidence building. Our essential questions to begin the year include: What is PE? Why is exercise important? And what are some ways to be safe during PE?
This year we are implementing a new running program called "Marathon Kids." Students will be incentivized for reaching certain millstones for the laps they run during class. Our intention is to inspire a new generation of runners and see growth throughout the school year.
We ask that all parents remind students to:
BRING THEIR WATER BOTTLES!!!
It's hot outside! Many students are still forgetting to bring their water bottles daily. We recommend something study and reusable with a label of the students' name.
Congratulations to Eden O., Hector C., Ariella B., and Aarina D. who got caught being responsible and completing last week’s Orca activity!
The character trait for September is respect, which represents the ORCA core value respect myself and others.
Here are some conversations starters that you can use with your child to help them learn more about respect. Here is a list of Epic Books about respect.
Parents, I encourage you to sign up for an OSES Connect account if you haven’t done so already. This site lists your child’s grades and commendations/ conduct points. Please reach out to us if you need help getting access.
Have a great weekend, Orcas!

Any club openings will be listed on the sign up genius.
CLUBS
Hello families!
Please read carefully for all club reminders:

- Building 1 (grades K-3) - clubs dismiss at 3:40 during the week and 2:40 on Wednesday
- Building 2 (grades 4-6)- clubs dismiss at 3:40 during the week and 2:40 on Wednesday
ABSENCES: Remember that 3 or more consecutive absences will result in a removal from the club. If you are missing club because of tutoring or sickness, email the club teacher so it can be excused.

Building 2: 4-6 407-299-6595 option 2 Ms. Molina
- CAR LINE APP DOWNLOAD: ALL PARENTS MUST HAVE PIKMYKID DOWNLOADED. YOU WILL THEN BE ABLE TO ANNOUNCE YOUR STUDENT YOURSELF WHEN YOU ARE ON CAMPUS. It makes the line longer if you are showing your car tag and not using PIKMYKID. IF YOU MUST SHOW THE CAR TAG, PLEASE BE SURE YOU ARE SHOWING IT TO THE PERSON TAKING NUMBERS BEFORE YOU GET TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE so that by the time you get to the front of the line, your student will be waiting. AGAIN, makes the car line longer if you are showing your tag at the front of the line because people are then backed up behind you.
- if you are having problems logging in or using Pikmykid please reach out to Nicole.Wallace@orlandoscience.org
- LATE ARRIVALS: Students can only be dropped off at the front office if it is AFTER 8:10 (class start time) & parents are with them as THEY NEED TO SIGN THEM IN AS A LATE ARRIVAL. PARENTS CANNOT LEAVE STUDENTS AT THE FRONT BY THEMSELVES.
- SCHOOL PAY: SCHOOL PAY was having technical issues with users attending Charter Schools. School Pay is letting us know it will be a few days before the issues are fixed. Please be patient. You do have 4 weeks to submit club payments. Another email will be sent out when it is fixed on their end.
- CLUBS: Clubs dismiss at 3:40pm and 2:40pm on Wednesdays. ARRIVE IN CAR LINE FOR CLUB PICK UP AT 3:45. (2:45pm for Wednesdays) to prevent congestion in the pick up car line.
- WALKERS: PARENTS must complete Walker Form before a student can be a walker. Walkers sign out at the front desk. WALKERS DO NOT GO INTO THE CAR LINE. THEY WALK OFF-CAMPUS.
- High school students picking up walkers must GO OFF CAMPUS, NOT TO THE CAR LINE.
- SKYWARD ACCESS: SKYWARD IS HAVING TECHNICAL ISSUES. If you are unable to access skyward parent access, be sure you have completed the emergency health form. (BACK PAGE HAS THE HEALTH CONSENT QUESTIONS) and they will be manually entered into Skyward. Another email will be sent out later once SKYWARD is fixed.
- Sibling Pick up: if you have both a highschooler and elementary schooler please take advantage of our new sibling pick up option where highschoolers wait between building one and two. DO NOT park at the high school and walk across Technology Dr as this results in causing the car rider line to backup.
