One critical difference in middle school education is the need to develop the whole student. We have a variety of programs that work on academic, social, and emotional growth for our students. One way we encourage this development is through incentives. The HMS staff recognizes that students have a variety of circumstances in their lives, some in their control and some out of their control, therefore we offer incentives in different categories to encourage kids in many different ways. If someone does not get one incentive, they will likely qualify for another so all students feel success. Please read about some of our incentive programs below.

Starting third quarter, students can earn an incentive for good attendance. Grade level teams will reward students who miss less than two days of school, or 16 hours of school, through February 10th. Consistent attendance ties closely with positive grades and behavior, so this is an important area of emphasis. Mark your calendar for February 10th to encourage your student to receive a reward for coming to school daily. Each month for the remainder of the year, students will be able to qualify for these incentives.

Much of our academic recognition occurs during Soar time where students can be rewarded for meeting academic goals. Recently, we took our second diagnostic iReady test. Students used teacher input to set personal goals to make improvement in reading and math. If students met their goal, or are on or above grade level they will attend a movie party next week with their grade level during the school day.

Academic incentives extend into our school organization, National Junior Honor Society. An induction ceremony was held last month to recognize these students.

Students with good behavior can be chosen as our Student of the Week winners. Each grade level chooses rewards for their students to recognize them for their hard work. Also during our Soar time, behavior is rewarded monthly for students who consistently meet expectations. In addition, teachers have classroom rewards for students who are on track.

Our next dance will be February 10 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Concessions will be available, admission is $5.

In Mrs. Brewington's 8th Grade Web Design class, students made products to pitch to the "Shark Tank" and try to gain investors. Students also made websites with company names, logos, and slogans to support their product pitch. Click on the links below to view these amazing products and websites!
