Portrait of a Learner
*IMPORTANT SURVEY INCLUDED*
Last month, we introduced to you our engagement in developing a "Portrait of a Learner". Thank you to those who attended (or plan to attend) the virtual focus group meetings. In an effort to hear from as many of you as possible, we included the input form below. Please watch the video and complete the form, as your input is so important as we go through this process.
Youth Development Master Plan
WPUSD and the City of Lincoln continue to develop a Youth Master Plan for our entire community. It is our goal to create integrated systems and services not only within our schools but throughout the community to best serve and develop youth. It is our hope that by speaking common language, working together, and all being intentional in our approach to ensure youth have the supports and opportunities (safety, relationships, engagement, community involvement, and skill building), they they will become healthy, productive adults!!
Throughout this process, we've discovered that many, if not all of the organizations in our community have very similar, youth-centered goals. As we continue to collaborate, we will keep you updated on our progress!

Traffic Impact at LHS
On Tues., 5/9 and Thurs., 5/11, LHS is fortunate to be hosting the CIF Sac Joaquin Section Division III Track and Field Championship. They will be welcoming over 2500 athletes, coaches, and spectators from 20 teams across the region to participate in track and field events. The championship events will run from approximately 11 am to 11 pm on both days.
This event will NOT impact instruction at LHS, however, there are two things to be aware of:
1. Street parking around LHS will be VERY limited starting around 11am on both days.
- We are not able to limit street parking around the school (along J St., 6th St, L St., etc...).
- The main lot off of J Street will be available for LHS students, LHS staff, and District staff who work in our parking lot. That lot will be open for our students and staff during the school day on both days.
- We will work hard to limit access to the J Street main parking lot during school hours. Event athletes, coaches, and spectators will not have access to the J Street lot from about 10am-3:30pm.
- We encourage you to park in the main lot in the morning both days and we will have a system to get you back into the lot easily after lunch (if you leave campus).
2. If you would like to attend the championship track meet, you will need to purchase a ticket from the CIF at the main gate.
Summer School Information
Wondering what our summer programs are this year? Below is a link to a document outlining what we're offering by grade level and who to contact for more information. While our summer programs operate on a referral basis (meaning students are suggested for summer school and are given priority to sign up), there will likely be opportunities for all families who desire to participate. If your students was selected as a priority participant, you will soon receive information via email on how to sign up. Stay tuned!
Adult Ed. Classes in WPUSD
Math Pilot Process and Findings Elementary and Middle School
Piloting curriculum allows for a 'trial' period of instructional materials and processes. Though our most recent middle school math pilot, 28 teachers collaborated in two groups, one for elementary and one for middle school, to explore, learn, field test, and get feedback on three different math programs. All three programs were highly rated and align with national math standards. The team presented valuable feedback from their teaching peers, students, parents, and administrators to determine the pros and cons of each program.
In the end, Reveal Mathematics by McGraw Hill publishers was chosen as the best fist for our students. Revel Mathematics is the current program in most of our high school math courses. We presented the committee findings about Reveal to the WPUSD School Board on May 2nd where they approved it for elementary and middle school math curriculum starting in the 2023-2024 school year.
Maintenance Getting Things Done!
Maintenance, grounds, and custodial staff took advantage of time without students during Spring Break to perform a variety of much needed work. The Lincoln High School grounds crew repaired an irrigation main line while the custodial staff painted the exterior entry to the Pence Gym. The theater lighting received a much needed upgrade as well.
Maintenance staff installed carpet in a classroom at Creekside Oaks Elementary and caught up on a wide range of work orders at multiple sites. In addition, the OLE (Outdoor Learning Environment) property received a new section of fencing to better control access to the site.
Did You Know?
What's New in Food Service!
Food Service has a new team member, Chef Adrian!
Adrian Padilla is originally from Southern California and has been working in professional kitchens for over 17 years. He is passionate about empowering individuals through teaching them cooking skills and is excited to share this passion with WPUSD. He currently lives in Nevada City with his lovely wife who is expecting their first child. He spends his free time running around with his two dogs, fishing and forging knives.
Chef Adrian is provided as part of our Brigaid contract. He will be working at multiple sites to provide hands-on professional development for the food service team. The training focused on preparing delicious scratch made meals. If you see him around our campuses please give him a big WPUSD welcome!
Our partners at SPORK food hub held more produce tasting events this month at SLE, COES and TBMS. They featured local red cabbage and had over an 80% approval rating at each school!
Spork A Spear!
WPUSD Food Service also participated in the first annual SPORK A SPEAR, celebrating asparagus season. Each kitchen showcased beautiful asparagus from Durst Organic Growers, located in Esparto, CA.
ANOTHER GRANT?!
Food Service is super excited to announce we received another USDA Equipment Assistance Grant. We were awarded 100% of our grant request of $100,000 for new equipment for LHS. Our goal of this grant is to help LHS close the gap between them and TBHS, so that they can successfully produce similar menus!

Affordable Connectivity
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, included the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) that provides eligible households up to $30 a month, or $75 a month for households living on tribal lands, toward their internet bills, as well as a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet.
All households with a child who was approved to receive free or reduced-price school meals under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or the School Breakfast Program (SBP), within the last 12 months, including children who attend schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), are eligible for ACP benefits. Note that every household with a child attending a school participating in the CEP is eligible for ACP benefits. Households are also eligible if a member of a household participates in certain federal benefit programsâincluding, among others, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, Medicaid, and Federal Public Housing Assistance.
Households may apply for the ACP via GetInternet.gov or can call 877-384-2575. NSLP and SBP households applying directly through the ACP website may need to show documentation proving their current participation in the NSLP and SBP if their eligibility cannot be confirmed with other personal identifying information. This may include presenting the householdâs school meals approval letter or other current official documentation.
Households with a child attending a school participating in the CEP will need documentation, such as an official, individualized letter from the CEP school stating that the student is enrolled at a CEP-participating school. The documentation must also include the studentâs name, the relevant school year, the name and address of the school, and school contact information. Schools are encouraged to include a unique number in the letter to enable the ACP administrator to confirm its authenticity if needed.
Local educational agencies that administer the NSLP and SBP may be well-positioned to let eligible households know about ACP. Please share this valuable resource with all eligible families and encourage them to sign up to save on their internet bills.
To support your efforts in spreading the word, please feel free to use the following resources:
- GetInternet.govâa one-stop shop to learn about ACP, check eligibility, enroll, and find fully covered internet plans.
- ACP Outreach Toolkitâoutreach materials from the Federal Communications Commission, including sample factsheets, flyers, PSAs, text messages, social media posts, and more.
- Outreach partners can request the pre-qualification widget to embed on their own websites by emailing ACProgram@usac.org with the subject line ACP Widget for technical support. In the email, please include the web address where you plan to add the widget. The interactive widget includes questions to check eligibility and apply for ACP.
- White House Fact Sheet on the ACP and its benefits.
CalKids College Savings Account
Did you know that your student can be awarded a $500 college savings account if your family qualifies as low-income?
Itâs true! California has begun a program called CalKIDS to give low-income students a jump start on saving for college. Additionally, if your family receives McKinney-Vento support from the district, your student qualifies for another $500. (Families are not required to contribute any additional money.)
When low-income students graduate from high school and attend an eligible school, whether it be a 4-year university, community college, or trade school, they can use the money on things like:
Tuition and related fees
Books and required supplies
Certain room and board costs
Computer equipment
How Do I Know If My Student Qualifies?
Students have to qualify as low-income, be in grades 1-12, and have attended a California school for at least one full year.
This sounds awesome! How do I sign up?
You need to register on the CalKIDS online portal. You will not be asked to disclose any taxpayer identification numbers.
- Your childâs Statewide Student Identifier (SSID). See next section for how to access that information.
- Your childâs date of birth.
- The name of the county where your child was enrolled in school in October of LAST school year (2021-2022). For us, that would be Placer County.
How do I find my childâs Statewide Student Identifier (SSID)?
Your childâs SSID is found on the PowerSchool Parent Portal. When you log in, youâll see a purple SSID icon next to your childâs name at the top of the screen. If you click on that purple icon, a window will pop up with the number that you need.
What if the CalKIDS website doesnât recognize my studentâs SSID number?
That means we probably donât have a household income form on file that indicates your income falls within the range to qualify your child. Fill out the household income form as the first step to qualifying your child!

Review/Update Your Emergency Contact Information
Online access is now LIVE!
If you haven't done so already, you will need to review your childâs emergency contact and health information for any updates. When reviewing and updating your childâs information, you will also be electronically signing your childâs 2022-2023 Technology Use and Waiver Agreements, Student Health Insurance option, and Photo Release Opt-Out Forms.
Please contact your child's SCHOOL office if you have any questions. If you've already completed this process, no action is needed. If you have not completed this process, it may impact your child's ability to attend school events and use district technology.
**If don't have a Parent Portal account you should have received an email or letter with information and instructions to set up your account. If did not receive an email or letter or you forgot your studentâs Access ID/Password, please contact your childâs SCHOOL and they can help.**
If you need technical assistance, please email HelpDesk@wpusd.org.
