Happy New Year Raiders!
Each month moving forward, we will highlight the amazing things that are occurring in our school. This month we highlight the Guidance & English Language Arts Department.
English Language Arts Department
The English Department currently offers two Advanced Placement courses:
AP Literature and Composition
AP Language and Composition
The school’s AP scores have been excellent, due to the hard work and dedication of our students. Last year’s AP Literature scores, for example, featured the following results:
School pass rate (3 or higher) - 95.2%
Massachusetts pass rate - 83.5%
Global pass rate - 77.2%
Guidance & Counseling Department
The Counseling Department has a variety of student support services including course requests and scheduling, Blue Raider Block seminars, college and career-related field trips, Freshmen breakfast sessions, as well as MCAS retakes throughout the school year.
Beginning on January 13th, 2024, the student scheduling request portal will open. Students will be able to request their courses for next school year, 2024/25. This will be in preparation for their individual meeting with their Guidance Counselor, in order to select their courses and electives.
January 22nd, 2024 - February 2nd, 2024, students will have scheduled time with their Guidance Counselors where they will review their course selections and teacher recommendations. Students will then confirm their course requests for the 2024/25 school year. Information for course selections can be found in the Course Description Catalog and will also be emailed to students.
Scheduling for the middle schools (incoming Freshmen fall of 2024) will take place the week of February 12th, 2024. Guidance counselors will go out to the middle schools and make presentations to discuss the course request process. Middle school teachers will also support students with recommendations on which courses and levels are appropriate for the student. The high school and middle schools will work together to facilitate this process for our students.
On Tuesday, February 6th and Wednesday, February 7th, the high school will be administering the Intro to Physics and Biology MCAS retest. This is for students who did not previously pass the test and now have another opportunity to do so. After school support classes have been offered to these students and are on-going provided by Ms. Scalisi-Burniston on both Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. There is no charge for these classes and students are encouraged to attend.
A Meditech Tour has been scheduled for January 25th, 2024. This field trip will be in collaboration with Case High School. Junior Achievement will provide transportation. Ten SBRHS students and ten students from Case High School will attend. Guidance Counselors are in the process of reaching out to students that may be interested in attending. This will be a two hour tour of the facility. Students will be leaving school at 9:00 a.m. and returning by 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided upon return to school.
Junior Classroom Presentations and Individual Junior Interviews: Beginning Monday, February 5th, Guidance Counselors will be presenting information regarding post-secondary planning. Counselors will discuss what students should expect as they begin to prepare for life after high school, whether interested in exploring two year colleges, a four year university, career planning, vocational exploration, trade school, etc. These classroom presentations will be followed up with individual meetings between juniors and their counselor.
Blue Raider Block: The Counseling Department will be providing workshops for the Freshmen class beginning on February 14th, 2024 until May. Every Wednesday during BRB, the counselors will be presenting workshops on the topics of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Academic Expectations and understanding your high school transcripts and how they impact your higher learning, GPA potential as well as college and career readiness. This is a great opportunity for students to get to know their counselors better and ask any questions they may have.
Freshmen Breakfasts: The counseling department will be sponsoring our next Freshmen Breakfast on Thursday, February 29th, 2024 at 7:45 a.m. The department hosted their first breakfast in November. Forty freshmen were invited to attend. The goal is to meet all our freshmen class by the end of the school year. In addition we will have them meet other fellow freshmen who perhaps they don’t yet know, and also get to hear directly from their Guidance Counselors. At the first breakfast, we had a former student who is now doing an internship with Somerset Berkley Regional High School as a School Adjustment Counselor, sharing her experiences about graduating from high school and what she is experiencing in her advanced degree program. Students have an opportunity to ask questions and make connections.
Attention Families & Community Members--Career Fair at SBRHS--We Need Your Help!
We are looking for some help getting presenters for this year's career fair which will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024 from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. On this date, we will be running the career fair like a two hour Blue Raider Block. Students will choose two fifty-five minute sessions and presenters will go to assigned classrooms to present to students who sign up for the time slot. Earlier this year, we sent a survey out to students asking what types of careers they were interested in learning more about. The attached list contains the responses we received (minus some slots that we have already filled with presenters). We are asking you if you know anyone in these fields that would be interested in presenting. If you or someone you know is interested in presenting, please have them fill out this Google Form. We will get in touch with additional information from there. Thank you for considering helping with this endeavor.

During class, the students chose a problem that had relevance to them, researched the issue, created an action plan and took action on their initiative. Below are some pictures from the event. Special thanks to teachers Ms. Emily Cabral, Mrs. Stephanie Freitas, Ms. Sarah Pavao and Content Coordinator Ms. Alice Ferris for their guidance and hard work to create a meaningful civics experience for our students.
