Word Wall Words
Please help your child learn to recognize the sight words. These are words that they will come across frequently as they read and will want to write them as an author. You can, of course, simply use the flash cards that were provided. However, your child will enjoy other means to learn these words. A special thanks goes out to Bennett for coloring this week’s page! Below, he is practicing writing words in several different colors.
Literacy Workstations
In the above activity, Aliyah is using magnetic letters to spell our Word Wall Words. Please review the Word Wall cards with your student weekly to help them in learning to identify these high frequency words.
Word Work
Bippity, boppity, boo. Let’s make an alphabet stew! The students randomly selected a letter and made the corresponding sound. This is great practice and fun!
Writers Workshop
During Writers Workshop we are learning how to write a nonfiction book with facts that we have learned. This week we studied fish from a variety of sources and recorded the information. The students were able to choose which facts they wanted to write about. Above, Grace said, “Fish eat worms.”
Shared Reading
During Shared Reading we are noticing the patterns in the stories. We enjoy reading familiar stories on the Smartboard. Many of these stories can be found on your child’s ChromeBook. Log in to Clever and then select the Learning A-Z icon (the Robot).
Math
In math, we started our week sorting Skittles - the kiddos really liked that! Sorting has led us into patterning. Above, Zamora and Laila have created AAB patterns. We have discovered that you can make patterns in lots of ways. Ask your child to create a pattern using motions like clapping, stomping, and jumping.
Math Workstations
Aria is working on her ChromeBook during math workstations. We are encouraging the students to use DreamBox. It is located on the Clever site. The students play learning games that become more challenging as the student completes levels.
Reading Workshop
We are reading a lot of nonfiction books. We have learned that nonfiction books may have a Table of Contents and an Index. We know about the spine and the cover page.
Science
We began a unit on Earth Science this week. We are discovering the power of the sun. We had fun checking out shadows!
Marvelous Monday Mania
We visited the library on Monday morning. The students had fun doing scratch art!
We used Mod Podge and tissue paper to decorate miniature pumpkins!
The children voted on which mouth, eyes, and nose our pumpkin should have. They were able to explore the pumpkin inside and out. They were so excited to light it up and have several fun stories read!
Preparing for Veteran’s Day
We are preparing for the Veterans Day Parade on November 11. Veterans and current military relatives of students are invited to attend. Muffins and juice will be served to guests and their students in the cafeteria at 8am. The parade of veterans will start at 8:30. Students will return to their classrooms immediately following the parade. Please let us know the name and branch of service of the family member attending. We look forward to honoring our Veterans on this special day.
