Letter From The CEO:
Happy New Year!
Do any of you set resolutions for the new year? I do—and keep them too. Here’s mine for this year: Consume more long-form news than short-form. That means I will try to take in most of my information about current events from books, articles, and documentaries. In an increasingly complex world, I’m leery about forming my opinions based on social media posts or 30-second news spots that leave out a lot of nuance. I’m going to immerse myself in an issue by reading or viewing sources that can’t be summed up in a meme.
If that sounds great to you but you’re not sure where to start, our Compelling Issues Book Club will meet this month to discuss Nadine Strossen’s book Hate: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship. Strossen argues that censoring hate speech doesn’t eliminate it, while discussion and education does. We’ll meet together to discuss if we think she got it right.
For those of you who have been missing Storytime during our winter break, Miss Christy is back and ready to read.
We’ve got all kinds of events running this winter, so check below to see what else is going on. Welcome to 2022 at the library!
Amie P.
