Penguin's Raft
4th Week of December
#GOPENGUINS #PositiveSignThursday
Dear Moraine Families,
As 2022 counts down, I look back on this past year with much gratitude. We have so much to be thankful for and being able to serve the Moraine community is something that is truly a privilege for our entire staff. This holiday season, I look forward to spending "unplanned" time with family. Trading in screens for books, having multiple "PJ Mornings," and focusing solely on the time with my kids are all things I look forward during this break!
As a reminder we want you to Rest, Relax, Rejuvenate this holiday break! We believe school breaks should be just that - a brief reprieve from school responsibilities like homework, special projects, planning, and grading. It is a time to reconnect with loved ones without the stress of school work creeping in. I hope each of you have a relaxing break full of family, fun and togetherness.
In this newsletter, you will find:
- Last Day! Staff Holiday Gift Crowd
- January's GIft of Failure Book Chat
- Reminder: Yearbook Prices increase January 1st!
Take care and be well,

HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING TO THE MORAINE STAFF
Wish the staff a 'Happy Holiday' through GiftCrowd, a group gifting site. Follow the link, choose the teachers and staff you would like to gift, designate the amount, and write a personal note. Staff will receive all gifts and notes together. Make a contribution from now until DECEMBER 23rd at 4 pm.
In the event of unclaimed gifts (yes, it has happened), the PTA will donate the unclaimed funds to the school.
If you are looking for something other than gift cards, you can find some of our staff favorite things on the PTA Memberhub site!
Please contact ptamoraine@gmail.com if you have any questions.
"The Gift of Failure" Book Chat
If you are like me, winter break is a great time to dive into a book and take a reflective look at life. The above is an excerpt from Jessica Lahey's book "The Gift of Failure" and I invite you to join our January Book Chat!
Whether you've read the book before, just skimmed pages, or have simply heard how it has changed parenting, I encourage you to join us on January 19 from 10:30-11:30am at Old Village School in room 311 (immediately following the Parent Lighthouse Chat).
We'll share some of our takeaways and the journey of being a parent in this post-pandemic world! You can find the audiobook through apps such as Libby or Hoopla and pick up a copy from Amazon.
Why Therapy Dogs?
Research strongly supports the benefits of therapy dogs! Charlotte’s Litter and PAWS for People list benefits of therapy dogs. They can:
- Lower people’s blood pressure and stress levels
- Increase levels of dopamine and serotonin
- Improve physical well-being
- Decrease anxiety
- Dramatically increase positive mood
- Ease social isolation and help children learn social skills
- Help young readers gain confidence
Moraine International Night
Moraine International Night is scheduled for January 20th, 2023 from 6-8pm. Join us in our multicultural celebration and discover Moraine’s cultural diversity!
**Participants: please check your email for important information/instructions.** (If you have not received an email, please contact Salam2410x@gmail.com).
Parent Coffee Talks
The Parent Lighthouse Team is planning to host a “Parent Coffee Talk” once a month. Every month we will meet to discuss each of the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Families”. You do not need to have attended the parent workshop in October to join us for these informal “Parent Coffee Talks”.
We will also be providing an opportunity to discuss The Gift of Failure, by Jessica Lahey, from Mr. Reimann’s summer “book chat”. This will take place on January 19, during the second half of the “Parent Coffee Talk”. This book is a great parenting resource, and truly warrants another discussion for those of you who were not able to join us in August.
The schedule is as follows:
January 19 – Habit 3: Put First Things First (9:00-10:15)
January 19 – Book Chat: The Gift of Failure (10:30-11:30)
February 23 – Habit 4: Think Win-Win
March 16 – Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be
Understood
April 20 – Habit 6: Synergize
May 18 – Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
These meetings will take place in Room 311 at Old Village School (405 Main Street in Northville) from 9:00-10:30 AM (except on January 19). Parking is behind Old Village School next to the library. Light refreshments are provided. Please bring something to drink and join us as we have fun discussing how to successfully (and at times unsuccessfully) implement the 7 Habits at home.
Please contact either one of us with questions:
Mindy Eichenberg (meichenberg@msn.com) or
Jami Knapp (jamiknapp@gmail.com).

Let Grow Project!
Northville Council of PTAs present the Let Grow Project!
When Adults Step Back, Kids Step Up
At Let Grow, we believe today’s kids are smarter and stronger than our culture gives them credit for.
Treating them as physically and emotionally fragile is bad for their future — and ours.
Let Grow is making it easy, normal and legal to give kids the independence they need to grow into capable, confident, and happy adults.
