Farmers & Ranchers' Cow/Calf College
The 2024 Cow-Calf College, offered by Nebraska Extension, gives producers a chance to learn about cow and calf health from some of the University of Nebraska—Lincoln’s veterinarians and researchers. Topics will range from newborn calf health to pinkeye, scours, causes of bovine abortion, and when to call the vet.
The free event is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024 from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (CST) at the Great Plains Veterinary Education Center (GPVEC), near Clay Center, Nebraska, with an optional tour of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center to follow, weather permitting.
There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is requested for food and supply counts.

Hands-on calving workshops scheduled in Sidney, Curtis
Nebraska Extension is hosting hands-on Calving Workshops at Sidney and Curtis, Nebraska in January featuring Becky Funk, DVM and Extension Specialist, and Lindsay Waechter-Mead, DVM and Extension Educator. Topics will include calving equipment and proper use, techniques for managing dystocia, when to call for help, and hands-on demonstration and training using a life-size model cow and calf.
Workshop dates and locations include:
- Thursday, January 18 at 6 p.m. MST at the South Platte NRD Building in Sidney
- Friday, January 19 at 1 p.m. CST at the NCTA Livestock Teaching Center in Curtis
The cost is $30, payable at the event. Students attend for free. You can register online here.

Certified Angus Beef's Nebraska BQA Workshop
All Nebraska cattle producers are invited to participate in the upcoming Nebraska BQA workshop on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at The Ball Room at Round the Bend Steakhouse in Ashland.
A Certified Angus Beef ® brand lunch will be served at 11 a.m., with the BQA sessions starting at noon. During the BQA sessions, industry experts will cover transportation, stockmanship and cattle handling, biosecurity, herd health and emergency action planning. Attendees can get BQA certified or renew an expired certification if needed.
The event will conclude with guest speaker John Cook, University of Nebraska (UNL) volleyball head coach. Attendees must participate in the BQA workshop and possess a valid BQA certificate to hear Coach Cook speak and participate in the meet-and-greet with him and UNL volleyball players.
Before the BQA workshop, kids will have the opportunity to complete Youth Quality Care for Animals (YQCA) at 10 a.m. As a reminder, YQCA is a requirement for all youth 8 – 21 years old who plan to exhibit beef, sheep, swine, goats, dairy, rabbits, or poultry in Nebraska.
