Family Newsletter — Sunday, October 22, 2023
This was a short but busy week.
Friday, the SHS completed professional development on equity. It was an excellent way to end a busy week. Staff were highly engaged in discussion concerning bias. Staff share thoughts and ideas that will continue to help support our students.
As a former basketball coach, I brought out the whistle, and the staff participated in a “Lay Up” drill activity where they were able to share ideas concerning engaging instructional strategies with each other.
On Saturday, Stanwood High School also hosted the Northwest Fall Leadership Conference. This conference brought in 190+ students from surrounding school districts. Seeing all of the students who are Future Business Leaders of America was exciting and being able to host it at our High School was special.
I hope you have a great week.

Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat
Stanwood High School's National Honor Society is hosting the annual Trick or Treat so others can eat food drive!
The food drive starts Tuesday, October 24th, and ends Friday, November 3rd! Students are asked to bring canned or boxed non-perishable food items to their second-period teacher. The class with the most items will win a special prize from the National Honor Society!
All food collected will be donated to the Stanwood Camano Food Bank. We can't wait to see all of the goods our school donates to give back to our community.
Replacement Levy
On Tuesday, the School Board approved the district to file Proposition 1 with our local election offices to run the Replacement Levy on the Feb. 13 ballot.
This Educational Programs & Operations levy is not a new tax. It is a replacement for our current levy, set to expire in 2024.
It bridges the gap between what the state provides and the people, programs, and services our school district has in place and relies on.
The replacement levy will help pay for staffing and operations, including sports, most safety and security personnel, and many other staffing costs, such as teaching, nursing, and counseling.
This replacement levy will continue to fund about 16% of our total budget. A levy failure will reduce staff, programs, and student services.
Welcome to WAGAP
We are proud to be partnering with the Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (WAGAP) to offer students who are choosing college as their next step an incredible opportunity.
WAGAP can guarantee students admission to six four-year public universities in the state if they meet these two criteria:
Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
Complete or are on track to complete by fall 2024 all the College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs)
WAGAP is aimed toward students in 11th and 12th grades to help them know they’ll be admitted to a university even before they apply!
Participating in WAGAP is just one part of our District Strategic Plan, which includes an overarching goal that every student will graduate with the skills, experience, and readiness to pursue the future of their choosing and be equipped with the knowledge, abilities, and attributes essential for a purposeful, productive, and happy life.
Learn more about our partnership with WAGAP and find helpful links to forms and more resources under the WAGAP tab on our Teaching & Learning webpage.
Hazards of E-Cigarettes Training starts October 26th
Many teens are curious about e-cigarettes. In 2022, about 14.1% of high school students and 3.3% of middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. Nearly half of high school students have tried an e-cigarette in some areas.
Many teens believe that e-cigarettes are safe. In reality, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and toxins, some known to cause cancer. Nicotine is highly addictive, especially to a developing teen brain.
What begins as experimentation can easily lead to a lifetime of nicotine addiction.
It does not take that long for young people to become addicted to nicotine because:
E-cigarettes provide nicotine in doses as large as, or larger than, regular cigarettes.
Children and youth become addicted to nicotine much faster than adults.
Nicotine has more harmful effects on the developing adolescent brain, making it worse for kids than adults.
Nicotine use as a teen raises the risk of using other substances and experiencing addiction later in life.
To help our students make better choices, SHS is training students by using a resource called CATCH My Breath over several advisory lessons starting October 26th.

WESCO Spectator Guidelines & Sportsmanship Code
The essential elements of character-building and ethics in interscholastic athletics are embodied in the concept of seven core principles: sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and respect. In an effort to demonstrate sportsmanship in the stands we ask all spectators to adhere to these 5 basic guidelines:
- I will appreciate all good plays and players whether they compete for my team or my opponent.
- I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom, and that learning is taking place.
- I will be positive and use respectful language towards players, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
- I will respect the abilities and sensitivities of our opponents and officials, regardless of the outcome of the contest.
- I will remember that my actions reflect on others, including students, school, and the community.
