The Patriot Post
October 11, 2024
Dear Shepard Families,
As we wrap up the first quarter of the school year, I want to take a moment to express how thrilled I am to be part of the Shepard community. The spirit at Shepard is truly unique, and it makes waking up each morning something to look forward to. Our students are thriving, and our teachers are working incredibly hard to support them.
October is often a challenging month for educators, so I am deeply grateful that our teachers will have a few well-deserved days off next week. If you have some extra time over the break, or if your children are looking for something constructive to do, I encourage each family to take a moment to write a note or create a card for their teachers. Having spent many years in the classroom myself, I know firsthand how much behind-the-scenes work—research, planning, preparation, and emotional investment—goes into the job, much of which cannot be seen from the outside perspective. It’s a role that is hard to “leave at work” at the end of the day, and the teachers and staff here at Shepard are nothing short of amazing.
You may have noticed the mighty University of Texas flag flying this morning at arrival time. While I’ve made it known that I’m an alumni, it wasn’t me who coordinated this—it was actually some of our Shepard families. I learned that earlier this year, there was a spirited silent auction with an intense bidding war over which school would have their flag flown at Shepard for two weeks. I must admit, I’m not unhappy that my fellow Longhorns rose to the challenge and won! Thank you to all our OU and Aggie families for being good sports.
I wish everyone a wonderful fall break and hope some of you get a chance to attend the Texas State Fair. Each child brought home a ticket, and I know those corn dogs, funnel cakes, and Midway rides will be unforgettable memories for the kiddos as they were for many of us who grew up here.
Sincerely,
Christy James
