Counting Down to Kindergarten
Registration is now open for our summer session! Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning on July 8th and ending on August 14th, from 9:30am-11am.
This program is designed for children ages 3.5 to 5. Siblings are also welcome to attend as long as caregivers are available to assist the child registered in the program.
Counting Down to Kindergarten features the academic and social skills your child will need prior to entering Kindergarten. The typical program has a set routine: First, there is a circle time where stories are read, songs are sung, and learning concepts are introduced. Then the children and their adults are free to explore the various stations. Each station focuses on developing various preschool level skills. Some of these skills are: early literacy, name recognition, letter recognition, counting, number recognition, name, letter, and number writing, playing cooperatively, taking turns, exploring through the senses, fine motor skills, and art exploration.
Parents/caregivers are required to remain with their children throughout the program. It is not a drop-off. We expect that adults will assist their child in learning stations and sit with them during circle time until the child is able to follow directions and participate appropriately on their own.

Library Expansion Updates:
You May Have Noticed
If you've been by the library in the last couple of weeks, you may have noticed work being done on the house next door.
Thanks to a New York State funded grant, the library is having the house safely abated and demolished in anticipation of hopefully expanding in the next few years.
This demolition work will likely extend through the first few weeks of July. We thank you (and we especially thank our neighbors) for your patience as we pursue this first step in an exciting time of change for our library!
Turning a Page for Our Community's Future
The current library building was constructed in 1968, which was the last time a building referendum was put in front of voters. When built, it served only 1,400 residents and now serves a school district of 10,032 people due to rechartering its service area in 2013.
After extensive public outreach and input, a master plan was developed in 2017 by architects at Butler, Rowland & Mays to meet current and future needs of the community by expanding and renovating spaces. Since then, the Library has made smart use of an endowment, reserve funds and NYS Public Library Construction Grants to complete portions of this master plan, including a 500 sq ft addition, a pavilion, interior renovation and accessibility upgrades to entrances and sidewalks without direct impact on local taxpayers.
The library expansion vote will be held on August 12th at Schuylerville High School

Question of the Month!
It's a new month, with a new opportunity to learn a little bit about our staff. Each month we ask the staff a question and post the response here in the newsletter. We'd love to hear your response to the question the next time you stop into the library! This month the staff answered the question: "Before you joined the library world, what did you want to be when you were growing up?"
Caitlin: "As a kid, I thought scooping ice cream was the best job!"
Julie: "Once upon a time I thought it would be the bomb to become an orchestra conductor. Not so much to be in control of talented musicians, but more to be front and center when those almighty sounds erupt from the stage."
Holly: "I wanted to be a writer, a librarian, or a teacher as a child. I started writing books around 6 or 7 years old about anthropomorphic animals. At 8 I spent an entire day organizing and making up my own numbering system for my books just so I could pretend to work a circ desk. I also had a chalkboard and would routinely force my cousins to play school with me. Now that I’m grown, I would love to have my own animal sanctuary when I grow up (more)."
Emilly: "An archeologist."
Jessica: "I wanted to be an Audiologist."
Beth: "At about age 4, I decided I wanted to be a clown. Controversial, I know.
Brandi: "I wanted to go into criminal forensics/criminal science. Love me some true crime."
Mary Lou: "I really wanted to be a veterinarian. But when I got to college, I discovered I really loved history. So now I just love pets, of whom historically I have had many!!"
