Knights Roundtable
Happy Holidays
Dear Families!
The Knights Roundtable is the Diversity, Equity, and Unity newsletter created for DJO students, family, and community. Each month will center around a theme. The initiative on Diversity, Equity, and Unity is key to the ability of Bishop O'Connell to fulfill its mission and to have a positive effect on society. Sit back, grab a snack, and enjoy reading about current events, student stories, and how to be involved in making O'Connell a place where all students feel proud to say, we are family. GO, KNIGHTS! 🎅🏼
Meet our 2022-2023 President and Vice President
Peyton Rush '23 President
How has your background and experience prepared you to be effective leader within the DJO community?
Logan Lynch '25 Vice President
What have you done to further your knowledge/understanding about diversity? How have you demonstrated your learning?
What I have done to further my knowledge of diversity is joining clubs at school like HSA , AASA and how this furthers my understanding of diversity is understanding other cultures. Another way I have further my understanding of diversity is by being a part of expanded services as a peer mentor and trying to understand the hardships of people with learning disabilities and trying to help those people. ~Logan Lynch
Celebration in other Cultures
Advent is a liturgical season anticipating both the second coming of Christ in glory and the celebration of His birth on Christmas Day. Christmas gifts are a reflection of God's gift of His Son to save us from our sins. Some others are listed here:
Advent signifies the coming of Christ and marks the beginning of the four-week Christmas season. Special church services are held to focus on the Nativity rather than commercial activities.
Epiphany is celebrated 12 days after Christmas on January 6 to remember the Wise Men who visited the baby Jesus. In some countries, gifts are given.
Las Posadas is primarily celebrated in Latin America although it is gaining popularity in other places. The 400-year-old tradition consists of 9 days of candle-lit parades of families and friends depicting Joseph and Mary seeking a place in the inn. The group travels to a different house each night singing a plea to let Mary and Joseph in. Once the couple is accepted, the group prays and shares traditional food such as tamales. The last evening is a big party that often includes a piñata and fireworks.
Christingles has become a common children's service during Advent. It began in a Moravian congregation in Germany in 1747, but it is now celebrated by congregations worldwide. Children are given a lit candle placed on the top of an orange, symbolizing the love of God and the world.

Posadas are celebrated throughout Mexico and other Latin American countries. During the nine days preceding Christmas, they recount Mary and Joseph's journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where they sought a place to rest as they awaited the birth of Jesus. On this holiday, blindfolded participants break piatas in the shape of a seven-pointed star (representing the seven deadly sins) (representing faith).
