Attendance Tracking
Next week we will begin tracking attendance data for students to ensure that they are getting the instruction we know they need. We hope that we can work in partnership with families to send the consistent message that Attendance Matters! Each week, our attendance team will meet to review data surrounding unexcused absences and tardies so we can help students succeed in maximizing their instructional time. A child will obtain an unexcused absence on their record anytime they are more than 5 minutes late to a class. Five tardies are equal to one unexcused absence.
What happens if a student accrues excessive unexcused absences or tardies to class?
- We will mobilize our attendance team to make sure a person close to the student gives them the opportunity to share why they have been missing instruction. They will get the chance to problem solve together and make an informal plan for getting to class every day, on time.
- After 3 and 7 unexcused absences, families will receive a state-mandated letter informing them.
- if absences or tardies continue to be a struggle, we will contact the family directly and work with them to create a plan for improvement.
We suggest that families regularly check their child's attendance (using the process outlined below) so you are aware of any undesirable trends. We know that when we work as a team to support kids, they do better. If you have questions about any attendance processes, please don't hesitate to reach out to our building administrators. Attendance Matters!
Ojibwemowin Signs at OEMS
Boozhoo!
We are very excited to announce the installation of Ojibwemowin signs at Ordean East Middle School!!
The addition of Ojibwemowin signs in school will allow students the opportunity to see the language everyday in a common and familiar environment. Ojibwemowin will become a natural and expected part of the educational experience. For students of Ojibwe heritage, the addition of Ojibwemowin signage will indicate an appreciation of their heritage and the history of the land on which the school sits, as well as foster a feeling of belonging in the school.
Ojibwemowin is the language of this place and we are excited to have Ozaawibinesiik teach us some of the familiar words in our schools.
If you have any questions, please contact Memegwesiikwe at diana.lawrey@isd709.org.

OEMS Staff Feature
Let's meet Mikayla Hiltner, Special Education Teacher
Describe your role at OEMS: Special Education Resource Teacher for 6th through 8th grade
What do you like to do when you are not at school?
When I’m not at school I like to go hiking with my dog, camp, bake, do pilates, and spend time with my family and friends!
We follow BARK principles at OEMS. BARK stands for Be kind, Act responsibly, Respect others, and Keep safe. Which is your favorite BARK principle?
My favorite BARK principle is “Be Kind”. You never know what other people are going through so it’s always important to be kind to everyone!
What advice do you have for middle school students to help them be awesome humans?
My advice for middle school students is to be yourself and stand up for what you believe in! It’s important to be authentic and be kind to everyone you come in contact with :)
Do you want to time travel to the past or to the future? When? Why?
If I could time travel, I would travel back in time to the summer so that I could travel more! I love to travel, and would like to spend more time doing that with my family and my dog!

Media Arts. What is Media Arts?
Media Arts is the study of human communication through film, photography, video,
audio, computer/digital arts, and interactive media. Creatively, students employ the elements of
space, time, light, motion, color, and sound to express their perspectives, feelings, and ideas.
Critically, they learn to interpret and evaluate media within aesthetic, cultural, and historical
contexts to become more enlightened consumers and effective citizens. Media Arts is
aesthetic-based and uses elements and tools of current and emerging technologies to create
works that express feelings and ideas. The act of creation is an essential part of thinking which
in turn builds the notion that there are alternative approaches to traditional mass media. In order
to learn the language and symbol systems of our current culture, it is important to look at works
that are generated from a wide spectrum of sources—from individual visions to the commercial
media industry. (Art and life are dependent upon each other and interconnected.) The study of
the image and sound elements is an essential prerequisite to the proper shaping of ideas into
messages.
