Maine Bioscience Day
- The Doughty Bulldogs wrapped up another successful ME Bioscience Day. Every student at JFDS got to participate during their regular science class.
- ME Bioscience Day is a statewide event that aims to get middle school students excited about possible biological science careers available in our home state of Maine. The day-long event focused on educating students about the different science related career paths and opportunities in Maine.
- An eclectic group of 25 local professionals volunteered to visit our middle school classrooms to talk with our students about their science careers. We heard from the Maine Audubon Society, Hirundo Wildlife Reserve, Biomedical Engineering Students, Virology Researchers, Dentistry, Aquaculture, Marine Science and Fish Biology, Nutrition, and Vector Ecology.
- This event was started by the Bioscience Association of Maine in 2016 to promote science as a subject in schools and create student awareness for a potential career path in a science field. Our Doughty science teachers work hard to make sure the entire school participates every year. The connections we make with our surrounding community is extremely valuable and always leaves a favorable impression on both students and teachers.
Spirit Week
- 2024 Spirit Week was one of the best ever. Staff and students enjoyed multiple themed days, including Decade Day, Twin Day, and (of course) Bangor Day!

Seventh Grade Inquiry Projects
Students in Mrs. Edward's Grade 7 Accelerated ELA class created their own inquiry projects in order to explore more about the concept of poverty. They developed questions and search terms, searched for credible sources, and pulled, paraphrased, and cited their evidence. Then, they created research posters and participated in a class-wide symposium to present their work. The wide range of topics and the depth of learning and understanding that these students demonstrated was truly impressive and provided a great foundation before reading S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders.
Guest Servers at Lunch
- The JFDS Guest Lunch Server program continues this year!
- The guest server program offers students a chance to connect with local businesses and groups to learn about future pathways.
- So far in 2024-25, students have been served lunch by the Boys & Girls Club, C & L Aviation, the Superintendent's Office, Bangor Public Works, the PCHC Health Clinic staff, the Air National Guard, and the Bangor School Committee.
- This week, the University of Maine Mens' Basketball team joined us for lunch.
Chronic Absenteeism - Did You Know?
- Chronic absenteeism occurs when a student misses 10% of the days that they are enrolled in school. In Bangor, for a student attending the entire school year, chronic absenteeism would be 17 days or an average of approximately two days per month. Chronic absenteeism is based on total absences - both excused and unexcused. We look forward to meeting our school goal of 95% attendance by June 2025!
